Occupant Detection Sensor (ODS) Description and Operation

~1min read

Description

For proper operation of the SRS airbag system, the SRSCM detects DTC for the passenger occupant detection system. If the seat is occupied, the occupant detection sensor measures electrostatic capacitance and sends a signal to the SRSCM via CAN. The SRSCM recognizes the signal as 2 (two) different classifications: Class No. 1 (empty or child seat) and Class No. 2 (small, large). Based on these signals, the ACU determines whether the PAB (passenger airbag) should be deployed or not.
If the SRSCM is struck or rotated with the IG switch ON, the seat belt pretensioner, curtain airbag, or side airbag may be activated. Handle it with care.
