Description and Operation

Description

Mounted on the windshield, the auto defog sensor evaluates and sends a signal to blow air when moisture is detected to prevent fogging. The air conditioning control module receives the signal from the sensor and removes moisture and prevents fogging by controlling the intake actuator, air conditioning, auto defog actuator, blower motor speed, and mode actuator.

Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. Turn the ignition off.

  2. Disconnect the auto defog actuator connector.

  3. Verify that the auto defog actuator operates in the open position when 12 V is applied to terminal 4 and ground is applied to terminal 6.

Check that the automatic defog actuator operates in the closed position when the connections are reversed.

    4. Sensor REF (+5V)
    5. Feedback Signal
    6. Sensor Ground
    7. Close
  4. Connect the defogger actuator connector.

  5. Turn the ignition on.

  6. Check the voltage between terminals 5 and 6.

    Specification

Door Position Voltage (V) Fault Detection
    Anti-Fog OFF (Close) 4,7 ± 0,15 Low voltage: 4.9 V or less
    Anti-Fog ON (Open) 0,90 ± 0,15 High voltage: 0.7 V or less

The current actuator position will be sent to the control unit.

  7. If the measured voltage is not within specification, replace the auto defog actuator with a known good one and verify proper operation.

  8. Replace the auto defog actuator if it is determined to be the cause of the problem.

Replacement

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

  2. Remove the glove box housing.

(Refer to Body - "Glove Box Housing")

  3. Remove the passenger side air vent duct (A) after loosening the screw.

  4. Remove the aspirator.

  5. Disconnect the connector (A), then remove the auto defog actuator (B) after loosening the screws.

  6. Install in the reverse order of removal. Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning
