Description and Operation

Description

The mode control actuator, located in the heater unit, controls the position of the mode door by operating the mode control linkage in response to the signal from the air conditioning control module.

Pressing the mode selection switch changes the mode control actuator in the following order: Vent → Bi-Level → Floor → Mix.

Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. Turn the ignition off.

  2. Disconnect the mode control actuator connector.

  3. Verify that the mode control actuator operates in the defrost position when 12 V is applied to terminal 3 and ground to terminal 7.

Check that the mode control actuator operates in the vent mode when the connections are reversed.

  4. Connect the mode control actuator connector.

  5. Turn the ignition on.

  6. Check the voltage between terminals 5 and 6.

    Specification

Door Position Voltage (V) Fault Detection
    vent 0,3 ± 0,15 Low voltage: 0.1 V or less
High voltage: 4.9 V or less
    Defrost 4,7 ± 0,15

The current actuator position will be sent to the control unit.

  7. If the measured voltage is not within specification, replace the temperature control actuator with a known good one and verify proper operation.

  8. Replace the mode control actuator if it is determined to be the cause of the problem.

Replacement

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

  2. Remove the steering column and shaft.

(Refer to Steering System - "Steering Column and Shaft")

  3. Disconnect the connector (A) and remove the mode control actuator (B) after loosening the screws.

  4. Install in the reverse order of removal.
