Description and Operation

Description

Integrated Rain Sensor

The integrated rain sensor (A) controls three systems: the front wiper, automatic lighting, and the central air conditioning.

  1. Wiper Control System

When the "AUTO" signal is received from the multifunction switch on the right, the integrated rain sensor detects the amount of rainfall. The sensor is installed inside the upper part of the windshield, near the engine control unit.

This system automatically controls the operating duration and speed of the wiper based on the measured amount of rainfall, even if the driver does not operate the wiper switch.

  2. Automatic Light Control System

When the "AUTO" signal is received from the multifunction switch on the left, the integrated rain sensor installed on the windshield detects the light brightness and controls the headlights and the interior multimedia screen brightness.

This system automatically adjusts the headlight and interior multimedia screen brightness based on the measured brightness, even if the driver does not press the lighting switch.

  3. Central Air Conditioning System

When the "AUTO" signal is received from the central air conditioning switch, the integrated rain sensor detects the amount of sunlight depending on the direction of sunlight.

This system automatically controls the cooling system based on the measured amount of sunlight, even if the driver does not turn on the air conditioning switch.

Functions and Operation Principles

Basic Principle

  1. Rainfall Detection

Light (beam) emitted by the LEDs is fully reflected from the outer surface of the windshield and returns to the photodiodes. If there is water on the outer surface of the windshield, the light is optically separated and partially reflected, and the remaining brightness is measured by the photodiodes. Residual water on the windshield prevents the light from being fully reflected. The loss of brightness caused by this shows how wet the glass surface is.

  2. Light Detection

Light brightness is measured by the diodes using infrared light. The brightness outside the vehicle is measured in two directions: (a) upward direction and (b) forward direction. The measured amount of light is used to determine whether it is day or night.

  3. Sunlight Amount Detection

The system measures the amount of sunlight on the left and right sides and controls the air conditioning on the driver side or the passenger side.

Operation Control

  1. When the "AUTO" signal is received from the multifunction switch on the right, the integrated rain sensor detects the amount of rainfall and controls the wiper motor.

  2. When the "AUTO" signal is received from the multifunction switch on the left, the integrated rain sensor detects the brightness and controls the headlights and interior multimedia brightness.

  3. When the "AUTO" signal is received from the central air conditioning switch, the integrated rain sensor detects the amount of sunlight and adjusts the air conditioning system.

Interference

The integrated rain sensor may malfunction due to the interference listed below.

  1. Dust on the measuring surface and other surfaces in the beam path (surface of the LEDs and photodiodes, optical fiber, bracket, and the windshield joint surface of the glass) reduces the received light.

  2. Movement of the windshield and bracket

  3. Movement of the bracket due to vibration

  4. Damaged wiper blade

  5. Damaged Headlamp

  6. Damaged Multimedia Device

  7. Damaged Air Conditioning System

Automatic Operation

  1. Rain Sensor Operating Condition

    Operation Mode Operation
Direct Mode This is the normal operating state of the built-in rain sensor when the wiper switch is in the "AUTO" position and the sensor has detected a dry windshield. Based on this state, the built-in rain sensor determines the wiper operating mode according to the precipitation and its duration.
Intermittent Mode The built-in rain sensor activates intermittent mode when the wiper operates more than two times in succession with a pause of 0.5 - 5 seconds.
Low speed Wipers operate continuously at low speed
High speed Wipers operate continuously at high speed
  2. Light Sensor Operating Condition

    Operation Mode Operation
Automatic Mode This is the normal operating condition of the integrated rain sensor when the headlamp switch is in the "AUTO" position and the sensor has detected light brightness. Based on this condition, the integrated rain sensor determines the operating mode of the headlamps and integrated multimedia according to the amount of light measured.
Low Beam On The lamp and multimedia turn on at medium brightness.
High Beam On The lamp and multimedia turn on at maximum brightness.
  3. Solar Load Sensor Operating Condition

    Operation Mode Operation
Automatic Mode This is the normal operating condition of the integrated rain sensor when the A/C switch is in the "AUTO" position and the amount of sunlight is detected by the sensor. Based on this condition, the integrated rain sensor determines the operating mode of the A/C system according to the amount of sunlight.
Manual Mode Cooling intensity is adjusted manually.

High Safety Function

  1. When ice or foreign material is present in the detection area, the integrated rain sensor cannot correctly recognize the operating conditions.

Special Condition Detection

  1. Rain sensor

Special Condition Operation Based on Special Condition Detection
Hesitation When the built-in rain sensor detects a high level of water (spray) in direct or intermittent mode, the system switches from park mode to high speed. Then wiping is performed once at high speed and once more at low speed. If the precipitation condition does not change after wiping, it returns to the original state (direct or intermittent).
Smearing Smearing is a thin oil film that dries quickly and occurs when a small number of raindrops are wiped by a dirty or worn wiper blade. The operating signal must not be output when smearing occurs in continuous or intermittent mode.
Mud If no change is detected after wiping, the built-in rain sensor determines that the windshield is contaminated. In this condition, the operating signal should not be output. If the windshield becomes clean (for example, by washer fluid), the built-in rain sensor returns to normal.
Automatic Day/Night Sensitivity Change The integrated rain sensor automatically adjusts sensitivity between day and night using the day and night sensor.
Ambient Light Level Compensation The system operates normally by compensating for interference caused by surrounding lighting.
Washer Fluid The built-in rain sensor does not respond to washer fluid during washing mode. In other words, the wiping speed does not change even if washer fluid is sprayed (automatic operation of the washer pump does not affect the operation of the built-in rain sensor).
  2. Light Sensor

Special Condition Driving in Special Conditions
Pedestrian Overpasses / High-rise Buildings / Street Trees The integrated rain sensor prevents the headlamps from flickering when it detects brightness while passing under overpasses, high-rise buildings, or street trees during the day. However, the headlamps may turn on when the sensor determines that it is nighttime while passing the above-mentioned locations.
Tunnels The integrated rain sensor recognizes a tunnel when the vehicle passes through it during the day. When entering a tunnel, the integrated rain sensor recognizes the tunnel and immediately turns on the headlamps, and turns them off a few seconds after exiting the tunnel.

Repair Procedures

Inspection

Checkpoint for the rain sensor:

  1. To correctly adjust the sensitivity if automatic wiping operates too sensitively or not sensitively enough.

  2. To check whether the sensor connector is connected properly.

  3. To check whether the sensor and bracket are connected properly.

  4. Check whether the sensor is contaminated with foreign substances (if the silicone gel pad of the rain sensor is contaminated with foreign substances, the rain sensor can be reused after removing them with a sticker roller.)

  5. To check whether the silicone gel pad on the sensor is damaged.

    • If the damaged area of the silicone gel pad exceeds 1.5 mm (0.0591 in.), the ideal appearance and functionality are no longer guaranteed. Therefore, the silicone gel pad must be replaced.

(Refer to Rain Sensor - Replacement)
