Airbag Non-Deployment Conditions

- In some low-speed collisions, the airbags may not deploy. The airbags are not designed to deploy in such cases because they cannot provide benefits beyond the protection of the seat belts in such collisions.

- Airbags are not designed to deploy in rear collisions because occupants are pushed back by the force of the impact. In this case, the airbags cannot provide any additional benefit.

- Front airbags may not deploy in side impact collisions because occupants move in the direction of the collision; therefore, front airbag deployment in a side impact will not provide additional occupant protection.
- However, in a side impact, side airbags and curtain airbags may inflate depending on the severity, vehicle speed, and angle of impact.

- In an angled impact, the force of the impact may direct occupants in a direction where the airbags cannot provide any additional benefit, and therefore the sensors may not deploy any airbags.

- Immediately before a collision, drivers often brake hard. This sudden braking lowers the front of the vehicle, causing it to "underride" a vehicle with a higher ground clearance. Airbags may not deploy in this situation, because the braking forces detected by the sensors may be significantly offset by such underride collisions.

- Airbags may not deploy in a rollover because the vehicle cannot detect a rollover crash. However, side airbags and/or curtain airbags may inflate when the vehicle rolls over after (or following) a side impact.

- Airbags may not deploy if the vehicle strikes objects such as utility poles or trees, where the point of impact is concentrated in one area and the full force of the impact does not reach the sensors.
