Manual Transmission Operation

~3min read

■ Type A

■ Type B

  • The manual transmission has 6 forward gears.
This shift pattern is printed on the shift knob. The transmission is fully synchronized in all forward gears so shifting to either a higher or lower gear is easily performed.
  • Fully depress the clutch pedal while shifting, then slowly release it.
If your vehicle is equipped with an ignition interlock switch, the engine will not start unless the clutch pedal is depressed while starting the engine.
  • The shift lever must return to the neutral position before shifting into R (Reverse). The button located directly under the shift knob must be pressed up (Type A), or the ring located below the shift knob must be pulled up (Type B), when moving the shift lever to the R (Reverse) position.
  • Make sure the vehicle has come to a complete stop before shifting into R (Reverse).
Never operate the engine with the tachometer (rpm) in the red zone.

CAUTION

  • When downshifting from 5th gear to 4th gear, be careful not to accidentally move the shift lever sideways so that 2nd gear is engaged. Such an abrupt downshift may cause engine speed to increase to the point that the tachometer enters the red zone. Such over-revving may cause engine and transmission damage.
  • Do not downshift by more than 2 gears or downshift when the engine is running at high speed (5000 rpm and above). Such downshifting may damage the engine, clutch and transmission.
  • When shifting between 5th and 6th gear, always press the shift lever fully down to the correct position. Otherwise, you could unintentionally shift into 3rd or 4th gear and damage the transmission.
  • In cold weather, shifting may be difficult until the transmission lubricant has warmed up. This is normal and will not harm the transmission.
  • If you have come to a complete stop and have difficulty shifting into 1st (First) or R (Reverse), move the shift lever to the neutral position and release the clutch pedal. Depress the clutch pedal again, then shift into 1st (First) or R (Reverse) gear.

CAUTION

  • To avoid premature clutch wear and damage, do not drive with your foot resting on the clutch pedal. Also, do not use the clutch to hold the vehicle stationary on a hill while waiting at a traffic light, etc.
  • Do not use the shift lever as an armrest while driving, as this may cause premature wear of the shift fork.
  • To avoid possible clutch damage, do not start with 2nd (second) gear engaged, except when starting on a slippery road.

WARNING

  • Before leaving the driver's seat, always fully apply the parking brake and turn off the engine. Then make sure the transmission is in 1st (first) gear when the vehicle is parked on a level surface or uphill, and in R (Reverse) when parked downhill. Unexpected and sudden vehicle movement may occur if these precautions are not followed in the order specified.
  • If your vehicle has a manual transmission not equipped with an ignition interlock switch, it may move and cause a serious accident when starting the engine without depressing the clutch pedal while the parking brake is released and the shift lever is not in the neutral position.
