Additional safety precautions

~3min read

  • Do not allow passengers to occupy the luggage compartment or sit on the seatbacks after folding them down. Occupants must sit upright in their seats, with their back against the seatback, the seat belt fastened and their feet resting on the floor.
  • Passengers must not stand up or change seats while the vehicle is moving. In an accident or emergency braking, a passenger who is not wearing a seat belt may be thrown inside the passenger compartment or out of the vehicle.
  • Each seat belt is intended for one occupant only. If two people use the same seat belt, they risk serious injury or death in an accident.
  • Do not attach any accessories to the seat belts. Devices advertised as comfort enhancers, or any modification that moves the seat belt, can reduce the level of protection it provides and increase the risk of personal injury in an accident.
  • Passengers must never place hard or sharp objects between their body and the airbags. Holding hard or sharp objects on the lap or in the mouth can be extremely dangerous if the airbags deploy.
  • Keep occupants at a safe distance from the airbag covers. Occupants must sit upright in their seats, with their back against the seatback, the seat belt fastened and their feet resting on the floor. If occupants get too close to the airbag covers, they could be seriously injured when the airbags deploy.
  • Do not attach or place objects on or near the airbag covers. Any object attached to or placed on the front or side airbag covers may interfere with the proper operation of the airbags.
  • Do not modify the front seats.

Any modification of the front seats may interfere with the proper operation of the system sensors or the side airbags.

  • Do not place anything under the front seats. Any objects placed under the front seats may interfere with the proper operation of the system sensors or with the wiring.
  • Do not hold children on your lap.
  • In a collision, a child could be killed or seriously injured. Children must be placed in the appropriate child safety seats or seated in the rear seats with the seat belt fastened.

    WARNING

    • If occupants are not seated correctly and in the proper position, they risk being pushed too close to the airbags, striking some part of the passenger compartment, or being thrown out of the vehicle.
    • Occupants must sit upright in their seats, centred on the seat cushion with the seat belt fastened, legs comfortably extended and feet resting on the floor.

Installing accessories or modifications to your airbag-equipped vehicle

If you decide to modify your vehicle, for example the frame, bumpers, front or side metal parts, or the suspension, be aware that these actions may impair the proper operation of the airbag system.

    Airbag warning label (if equipped)

Dedicated warning labels inform the driver and passengers of the potential risks associated with the airbag system.

Although these mandatory warnings focus on the risks to children, we also want to point out the dangers to which adults are exposed. These are described in the preceding pages.
