Repair Procedures

Removal

Engine removal is not necessary for this procedure.

  1. Remove the engine cover.

(See Engine and Transaxle Assembly - Engine Cover)

  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  3. Remove the right front wheel.

    (See Suspension System — Wheel)

  4. Remove the engine room cover.

(See Engine and Transaxle Assembly - Under Hood)

  5. Drain the engine coolant.

(Refer to Cooling System - "Engine Coolant")

  6. Drain the engine oil.

(See Lubrication System - Engine Oil)

  7. Remove the drive belt.

(See Drive Belt System - Drive Belt)

  8. Remove the generator.

(See Engine Electrical System - "Alternator")

  9. Remove the drive belt tensioner.

(Refer to Drive Belt System - "Drive Belt Tensioner")

  10. Remove the water pump.

(See Cooling System - "Water Pump")

  11. Remove the crankshaft damper pulley.

(See Drive Belt System - "Crankshaft Damper Pulley")

  12. Remove the cylinder head cover.

(Refer to Cylinder Head Assembly - "Cylinder Head Cover")

  13. Remove the engine mount support bracket.

    1. Install a jack to the edge of the ladder frame to support the engine.

    2. Disconnect the engine ground cable (A).

    3. Remove the engine mount support bracket (A).

      Tightening Torque

      Nut (B):

      88,2–108 N·m

      Bolts and nuts (C):

      58,8–74 N·m

  14. Remove the variable force solenoid (VFS) (A).

  15. Remove the timing chain cover (A).

Installation

  1. Install the timing chain cover.

    1. The sealant areas on the timing chain cover and mating parts (cylinder head, cylinder block) must be cleaned of engine oil, etc.

    2. Before installing the timing chain cover, apply liquid gasket MS721-40AA to the gap between the cylinder head and the cylinder block.

Assemble the part within 5 minutes after applying the sealant.

Bead width: 4.0 mm (0.16 in)

    3. Before installing the timing chain cover, apply liquid gasket TB1217H to the chamfer of the timing chain cover. Use TB1282B or TB1216E equivalent for the water pump groove. Assemble the parts within 5 minutes after applying the sealant.

Apply the sealant in a continuous bead to each of the areas shown below.

      Bead width:

      A: 2.5–3.5 mm (0.09–0.14 in.)

      B: 1.5–2.5 mm (0.06–0.10 in.)

      C: 4.5–5.5 mm (0.18–0.22 in.)

      D: 3.5–4.5 mm (0.14–0.18 in.)

    4. Use the locating pins on the cylinder block and the holes in the timing chain cover as references to correctly install the timing chain cover.

      Tightening Torque

      A: 18.6–24 N·m -5EA

      B: 44.1–54 N·m -3EA

      C: 9.8–11.8 N·m -8EA

      D: 18,6–24 N·m -1EA

  2. Install the variable force solenoid (VFS) (A).

    Tightening torque: 7.8–11.8 N·m

  3. Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.
