Electric Power Steering (EPS)

~2min read

The power steering system uses the engine to help you steer the vehicle. If the engine is off or if the power steering system malfunctions, the vehicle can still be steered, but more effort will be required on the steering wheel.

EPS is controlled by the power steering control unit, which detects steering wheel torque and vehicle speed to control the motor. Steering effort becomes heavier as vehicle speed increases and becomes lighter as vehicle speed decreases for better steering wheel control.

If you notice any change in the effort required to steer during normal operation, have the system inspected at a specialized workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorized Kia dealer/service partner.

NOTICE

The following symptoms may occur during normal vehicle operation:

  • The EPS warning light does not illuminate.
  • Steering effort is high immediately after the ignition is turned on. This occurs while the EPS system performs a self-diagnosis. When the diagnosis is complete, steering effort will return to normal.
  • A click may be heard from the EPS relay after the ignition switch is turned to the ON or LOCK position.
  • Engine noise may be heard when the vehicle is stopped or moving at low vehicle speed.
  • If a malfunction is detected in the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system, the steering assist function will be disabled to prevent a fatal accident. At this time, the warning lamp will illuminate or flash on the instrument cluster, and steering effort may suddenly become heavy. Have the vehicle checked immediately after moving it to a safe location.
  • The steering wheel effort increases if the steering wheel is turned continuously when the vehicle is not moving. However, after a few minutes it will return to normal conditions.
  • If the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system does not operate normally, the warning lamp will illuminate on the instrument cluster. The steering wheel may become difficult to control or may operate abnormally. In this case, have the system inspected by a professional workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorized Kia Dealer/Service Partner.
  • When you operate the steering wheel at low temperatures, an abnormal noise may occur. If the temperature rises, the noise will disappear. This is a normal condition.
