Driving Your Vehicle

Starting the Engine

~2min read

WARNING

  • Always wear appropriate footwear when driving. Inappropriate footwear (high heels, ski boots, etc.) may prevent you from operating the brake, accelerator, and clutch pedals (if equipped) properly.
  • Do not start the vehicle with the accelerator pedal depressed. The vehicle may move suddenly and cause an accident.
  • Wait until the engine speed returns to normal. The vehicle may move suddenly if the brake pedal is released while the engine speed is high.

Starting the Gasoline Engine

1. Make sure the parking brake is applied.

2. Manual transmission: Fully depress the clutch pedal and shift the transmission into neutral. While holding the clutch pedal and brake pedal depressed, turn the ignition key to the ON position. Automatic transmission / dual clutch transmission: Move the shift lever to P (Park). Fully depress the brake pedal.

You can also start the engine when the shift lever is in N (Neutral).

3. Turn the ignition key to the START position and hold it until the engine starts (10 seconds maximum), then release the key. Start the engine without depressing the accelerator pedal.

4. Do not wait for the engine to warm up while the vehicle is stationary. Start driving at moderate engine speed. (Avoid hard acceleration and braking.)

Starting and Stopping the Engine for the Turbocharger Intercooler

1. Do not rev or accelerate the engine immediately after starting.

If the engine is cold, let it idle for a few seconds to allow sufficient lubrication to reach the turbocharger bearings.

2. After high-speed or prolonged driving under heavy engine load, let the engine idle for about 1 minute before turning it off.

This idle time allows the turbocharger to cool down before the engine is stopped.

CAUTION

Do not turn off the engine immediately after it has been under heavy load. This may cause serious damage to the engine or turbocharger.

CAUTION

If the engine stalls while driving, do not attempt to shift the lever to P (Park). If traffic and road conditions permit, you may shift the lever to N (Neutral) while the vehicle is moving and turn the ignition key to the START position to attempt to restart the engine.

CAUTION

  • Do not operate the starter motor for more than 10 seconds. If the engine stalls or does not start, wait 5–10 seconds before operating the starter again. Improper use of the starter may cause damage to it.
  • Do not turn the ignition key to the START position while the engine is running. This may damage the starter.

Stopping the Gasoline/Diesel Engine (Manual Transmission)

1. Make sure the vehicle is completely stopped, and keep the clutch pedal and brake pedal depressed.

2. Shift the transmission into neutral while depressing the clutch and brake pedals.

3. Apply the parking brake by pressing the parking brake pedal.

4. Turn the ignition key to the LOCK position and remove it.
