The Lexus GS Smart Entry System provides maximum convenience when getting in and out of the vehicle. Sensors detect the key nearby and automatically unlock the doors and trunk, which is ideal for everyday situations or bad weather. The system is complemented by a Start/Stop button that starts the engine as soon as the key is detected. This chapter describes all functions and safety aspects for worry-free use.

Manual Passenger Airbag ON/OFF System

This system deactivates the passenger airbag, the passenger knee airbag, and the passenger side airbag.

Deactivate the airbags only when using a child seat on the front passenger seat.

Information on the "PASSENGER AIR BAG" Indicator Light

If any of the following problems occur, there may be a system malfunction. Have the vehicle inspected by a Lexus dealer or authorized repairer, or another qualified and properly equipped repair facility.

  • Neither "ON" nor "OFF" comes on.
  • The indicator light does not change when the passenger airbag ON/OFF switch is set to "ON" or "OFF".

WARNING

When installing a child seat

For safety reasons, child seats must always be installed on the rear seats.

If the rear seat cannot be used, the front passenger seat can also be used, provided the passenger airbag ON/OFF switch is set to "OFF".

If the passenger airbag ON/OFF switch remains set to "ON", the strong impact of a deploying airbag can cause serious or even fatal injury.

If no child seat is installed on the front passenger seat

Make sure the passenger airbag ON/OFF switch is set to "ON".

If the switch remains set to "OFF", the airbag may not deploy in a collision, which can result in serious or even fatal injury.

Child Safety Precautions

Observe the following precautions when children are in the vehicle.

Use a child seat suitable for the child's age and size until the child is big enough to wear the seat belt correctly.

  • Children should sit in the rear seats so that they do not accidentally touch the shift lever, windshield wiper switch, etc.
  • Use the rear door child-protector locks and the window lock switch to prevent children from opening the doors or accidentally operating the power windows while the vehicle is in motion.
  • Do not allow small children to operate equipment where body parts could become trapped or crushed. This includes, for example, the power windows, hood, trunk, seats, etc.

WARNING

Never leave children unattended in the vehicle, and never give children the key.

Children could otherwise start the vehicle or shift the transmission into neutral.

In addition, children may injure themselves while playing with the windows, the sunroof (if equipped), or other vehicle features. Furthermore, very high or low temperatures inside the vehicle can be fatal to children.

The Lexus GS (4th generation) features a manual passenger airbag deactivation system, which allows child seats to be transported safely on the front passenger seat. The clear operating instructions and child safety information emphasize the vehicle's high safety standard. The system offers maximum flexibility in choosing seating positions for children.

These safety measures prevent incorrect operation and ensure that all occupants, especially the youngest, are optimally protected. Lexus demonstrates its responsibility to families here.
