Engine Coolant
Checking the Coolant Level
WARNING
Do not use a match or other open flame in the engine compartment. DO NOT ADD COOLANT WHEN THE ENGINE IS HOT:
A hot engine is dangerous. If the engine has been running, components in the engine compartment may be very hot. Burns may result. Carefully check the coolant level in the coolant reservoir, but do not open it.
Turn the ignition switch to
the OFF position and make sure the fan is not turning before working near the cooling fan:
It is dangerous to work near the cooling fan while it is operating. The fan may continue to run indefinitely, even after the engine has stopped and the engine compartment temperature is high. You may be seriously injured by the rotating fan blades.
WARNING
Do not remove the cooling system cap
when the engine and radiator are hot:
When the engine and radiator are hot, scalding coolant and steam may be forced out under pressure and cause serious injury.
NOTE
Engine coolant changes should be performed by an authorized Mazda dealer.
Check the freeze protection and the coolant level in the coolant reservoir at least once a year, at the beginning of winter, and before traveling to an area where temperatures may drop below 0°C (32°F).
Inspect all cooling system hoses and heater hoses for condition and connections.
Replace any hose that is swollen or deteriorated.
With the engine cold, the coolant should fill the radiator and be between the F and L marks in the reservoir.

If the level is at or near the L mark, add enough of the specified coolant to the coolant reservoir to maintain freeze and corrosion protection and bring the level up to the F mark.
Tighten the coolant reservoir cap securely after adding coolant.
WARNING
- Coolant damages paint.
NOTE
If "FL22" appears on or near the cooling system cap, it is recommended to use genuine Mazda FL22 coolant (page 6-4).

If the coolant reservoir is empty or needs to be refilled with coolant frequently, consult an authorized Mazda dealer.
