Cooling System

Cooling System Hoses

~1min read

GENERAL INFORMATION

The number, routing and design of hoses vary depending on the model, but in general one common procedure is used.

Check the security of hose clamps or new hoses after several hundred kilometers of driving.

If necessary, refill the cooling system.

Removal and Installation

PROCEDURE

1. Before starting work, make sure new hoses are available, together with new clamps if required. It is recommended to replace clamps together with hoses.

2. Drain the coolant from the cooling system (see Subsection 2.4.5), retaining the coolant if it is suitable for reuse.

3. Lubricate hose clamps with oil if they are damaged by corrosion.

4. Release the clamps from the respective hoses. Three types of hose clamps are used: screw, spring and crimp clamps.

5. Release screw clamps by turning the screw counterclockwise. Release spring clamps by squeezing their ears and removing them from the hose connection. Crimp clamps are not reused; it is best to cut them off with metal snips or pliers.

6. Disconnect the wires and hoses attached to the hose being removed. Make a note of the original position of all components before disconnecting them.

7. Twist the hose to work it off the connection. Do not damage the connections on fragile components such as the radiator. If the hose is stuck firmly, the best method is often to cut it off with a sharp knife, taking care not to damage the connection.

8. Before installing the new hose, lubricate the connections with soapy water or another rubber-compatible lubricant. Do not use oil or grease that may damage the rubber.

9. Install the hose clamps onto the hose ends, then install the hose onto the connections.

10. Hold the hose in position, then tighten the hose clamps.

11. Fill the cooling system.

12. Start the engine and check for leaks.
