Active Emergency Braking

~4min read

Active Emergency Braking can help reduce the damage caused by collisions with vehicles and obstacles directly ahead, when a collision can no longer be avoided by manual braking or steering. Before Active Emergency Braking is applied, the driver is warned by a forward collision alert 175.

The function uses various inputs (e.g. radar sensor, brake pressure, vehicle speed) to calculate the probability of a frontal collision.

Active Emergency Braking operates automatically at speeds above walking pace, provided the Collision Preparation setting is not deactivated in the vehicle personalization menu 116.

The system consists of:

  • Brake Preparation System
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Forward-Looking Brake Assist

Caution

This system does not replace the driver's responsibility for driving the vehicle and watching the road. Its function is limited to supplementary use only.

The driver must continue to press the brake pedal when the situation requires it.

Brake Preparation System

When a vehicle ahead is approaching so quickly that a collision is almost unavoidable, the brake preparation system lightly pre-charges the brakes.

This reduces response time when manual or automatic braking is required.

The braking system is prepared so that braking can take effect more quickly.

Automatic Emergency Braking

After the brakes have been prepared and just before an imminent collision, this function automatically applies limited braking to reduce the impact speed of the collision.

Forward-Looking Brake Assist

In addition to brake preparation and automatic emergency braking, the forward-looking brake assist function makes brake assistance more sensitive. As a result, lightly pressing the brake pedal immediately produces strong braking.

This function helps the driver brake faster and harder before an imminent collision.

Caution

Active Emergency Braking is not designed to apply independent hard braking or to automatically avoid a collision. It is designed to reduce vehicle speed before a collision.

It may not react to stationary vehicles, pedestrians or animals. After an unexpected lane change, the system needs some time to detect a vehicle ahead in the new lane.

The driver's full attention is required at all times while driving. The driver must always be ready to act, brake and steer to avoid collisions. The system is designed to operate with all occupants wearing their seat belts.

System limitations

Active Emergency Braking is limited or does not work in rain, snow or high levels of dust because the radar sensor may be covered by a film of water, dust, ice or snow. If the sensor is blocked, clean the sensor cover.

In very rare cases, the Active Emergency Braking system may apply a short automatic braking when it does not seem necessary, for example due to road signs on a curve or vehicles in the other lane. This is acceptable operation; the vehicle does not need servicing.

Press the brake pedal firmly to cancel automatic braking.

Settings

Settings can be changed in the Collision Preparation menu of vehicle personalisation, 116.
