ECU REPLACEMENT, PROGRAMMING OR REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE

The system can be programmed and reprogrammed through the diagnostic socket using the RENAULT CLIP diagnostic tool (see Technical Note 3585A or follow the instructions provided by the diagnostic tool).

WARNING:
  • Switch on the diagnostic tool.
  • Connect a battery charger (for the whole duration of the ECU (re)programming, the engine cooling fan units are switched on automatically).
  • Observe the engine temperature limits given in the diagnostic tool before any (re)programming.

Before any programming, reprogramming or aftersales ECU replacement, save the following data in the diagnostic tool:

  • The IMA codes (injector flow correction) and the engine adaptive values, using the SC003 "ECU data backup" routine.

After any programming, reprogramming or ECU replacement:

  • Switch off the ignition.
  • Start then stop the engine (to initialise the ECU) and wait 30 seconds.
  • Switch the ignition on and use the diagnostic tool to carry out the following steps:
  • Use the SC001 "write saved data" routine to restore the individual injector correction and the engine adaptive values.
  • Use the VP010 "write VIN" routine.
  • Following the (re)programming of the injection system, stored faults may appear in other ECUs.

Clear the memory of these ECUs.

  • Carry out a road test followed by a further check with the diagnostic tool.

Note: If the SC001 and SC003 routines are forgotten or do not work, after replacing or (re)programming the ECU it is necessary to enter the individual injector correction code for each injector manually by reading the code on each injector (see injector replacement).

WARNING

An ECU from the parts store cannot be tested, as it will then no longer be fitted to any other vehicle.

If the injection ECU appears to be faulty, contact your Techline and refer to the "Diagnostic sheet" on page 13B-5.

  • Injector replacement

Note: The individual injector correction code is a calibration carried out at the factory on each injector in order to adjust the flow of each one precisely.

These correction values are engraved on the Bakelite body of each injector (6 alphanumeric characters) and then entered into the ECU, which can then control each injector while taking into account its own manufacturing variation.

When replacing one or more injectors, it is therefore necessary to change the individual injection correction parameters for the injector outlet concerned. The system can be configured via the diagnostic socket using the RENAULT CLIP diagnostic tool.

To do this, rewrite the individual injection correction code(s) into the ECU using the following command:

SC002 "Entering injector codes"

Note the individual injection correction codes engraved on the Bakelite body of each injector and follow the instructions displayed on the screen.

This command is valid for both single-injector and group entry.
