The "Carminat" navigation assistance system guides the vehicle user using a screen and a voice synthesiser.

This system allows:

  • to go to a specific location:
  • street, avenue, boulevard, etc.,
  • hotel,
  • public services,
  • petrol stations, garages,
  • etc.,
  • to select a guidance criterion (the selected criterion appears as a symbol on the status line at the bottom of the screen):
  • optimised for travel time,
  • optimised for distance,
  • using main roads as much as possible,
  • using main roads as little as possible,
  • avoiding tolls,
  • to store addresses (address book),
  • to display a road map:
  • of the current location,
  • of the destination,
  • to display the journey time or estimated time of arrival,
  • to receive written or voice messages from the "traffic information" system.
Note: For operation of the system and description of the various menus, refer to the owner's manual.

The "Carminat" system uses the "vehicle speed" signal from the ABS control unit to measure distance travelled, and the "reverse gear" signal.

A dedicated multiplexed network for the Carminat function links the navigation control unit, the central communication unit, the display and the radio (depending on version).

To operate, this system consists of:

  • a central communication unit,
  • a keypad (integrated into the central communication unit),
  • an electronic navigation control unit incorporating the acceleration sensors (gyroscope) and the CD-ROM reader,
  • a satellite link (GPS antenna) for locating the vehicle,
  • a display for showing text and map data,
  • a loudspeaker for voice messages,
  • a CD-ROM containing the map data for the vehicle's country of delivery,
  • an FM antenna for traffic information messages,
  • a deployment unit.

NOTES

  • If the vehicle is moved with the ignition off, the navigation system may take a few minutes to find its exact position again (see the "relocation" section).
  • If the vehicle battery has been disconnected, the system may take up to 20 minutes to find its exact position. The vehicle must then be outdoors (system switched on so that it can receive satellite signals via the GPS antenna).
  • The unit can also operate without valid GPS data. In this case, position determination may be less accurate.
  • As soon as the exact position of the vehicle has been found by the GPS system, the satellite symbol on the screen changes from red to green.
  • On motorways, the distances given by the system for exits differ from those shown on motorway signs: the signs indicate the distance to the start of the exit, whereas the Carminat system refers to the end of the exit.
