Seat belt pretensioner. Safety - warning symbol. Airbag system. Driver airbag
The seat belt and airbag system of the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) work hand in hand for the best protection. This section explains the function of seat belt pretensioners, airbags and warning symbols, and the importance of a fault-free system check.
Seat belt pretensioner
All seat belts are equipped with a seat belt pretensioner. A mechanism in the pretensioner tightens the seat belt in the event of a sufficiently severe impact. In this way, the seat belt restrains the occupant more effectively.
WARNINGNever insert the front passenger seat belt tongue into the driver's side buckle. Always insert the seat belt tongue into the buckle on the correct side. Do not damage the seat belts and do not insert foreign objects into the buckle. Otherwise, the seat belts and buckles may not function as intended in a crash. There is a risk of serious injury.
Safety - warning symbol
The warning symbol is displayed when a fault is detected during diagnostics, or when a system has been activated. In certain cases, the warning symbol is displayed together with a message in the information display of the instrument cluster.

Warning triangle and airbag system warning symbol in the digital instrument cluster.
The warning symbol in the instrument cluster lights up when the transponder key is in the key position
. If the airbag system functions correctly, the symbol goes out after approx. 6 seconds.
If the airbag system warning symbol does not go out or lights up while driving, this indicates that the airbag system is not functioning properly.
The symbol indicates a fault in the seat belt system, the SIPS or IC system, or another fault in the SRS system. Volvo recommends that you contact a Volvo Authorized Workshop as soon as possible.
If the warning symbol fails, the warning triangle lights up and the message SRS Airbag service required or SRS Airbag service urgent appears in the display. Volvo recommends that you contact a Volvo Authorized Workshop immediately.

Airbag system
In a frontal collision, the airbag system helps protect the head, face and chest of the driver and front passenger.

The airbag system from above, left-hand drive.

The airbag system from above, right-hand drive.
The system consists of airbags and sensors.
In the event of a sufficiently severe impact, the sensors respond and the airbag or airbags inflate and heat up. The airbags cushion the impact for the occupant at the moment of collision.
When the airbag is compressed during a collision, the air escapes. This causes a heavier release of smoke inside the vehicle, which is completely normal. The entire process, i.e. inflation and deflation of the airbag, takes place within a few tenths of a second.
WARNINGVolvo recommends that you have repairs carried out by an authorised Volvo dealer.
Incorrect work on the airbag system can cause malfunction and serious injury.
CAUTIONThe sensors respond differently depending on the course of the accident and on whether the seat belt is fastened or not. Applies to all seat belt positions.
Accident situations may therefore arise in which only one (or none) of the airbags is deployed. The sensors measure the impact force the vehicle experiences, and the measures are adapted accordingly so that one or more airbags are deployed.

Driver airbag
In addition to the seat belt for the driver's seat, the vehicle is equipped with an airbag.
The airbag is folded and mounted in the center of the steering wheel. The steering wheel is marked AIRBAG.
WARNINGThe seat belt and the airbag work together. If the seat belt is not used, or is used incorrectly, this can reduce the effectiveness of the airbag in a collision.
Related information
- Passenger airbag
The airbag systems and seat belt pretensioners of the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, model years 2013–2016) work precisely together to provide the best possible protection in the event of an accident. The driver and passenger airbags, supplemented by the intelligent warning symbol system, ensure a high level of safety in frontal and side collisions.
Volvo relies on sophisticated sensor technology and a robust structure to significantly reduce the risk of injury in accidents. This makes the S80 a reliable partner on every journey.
FAQ
How do I recognise a fault in the airbag system?
A warning symbol that stays lit permanently in the instrument cluster indicates a fault. Have the system checked immediately by an authorised Volvo dealer.
Why is the seat belt pretensioner important?
In a collision, it tightens the seat belt so that the occupant is restrained optimally and the protection of the airbag is supplemented.
