In safety mode, the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) monitors functions that may be affected after an accident. This section explains start attempts, carefully moving the vehicle, and the recommended steps for maximum safety.

Safety mode - Start attempt

If the vehicle is in safety mode, you may attempt to start the engine if everything appears normal and it is certain that there is no fuel leak.

First check that no fuel has leaked from the vehicle. There must be no smell of fuel.

If everything appears normal and it has been confirmed that there are no fuel leaks on the vehicle, try to start the vehicle.

Remove the transponder key and open the driver's door. If a message appears indicating that the ignition is on, press the start button. Then close the door and insert the transponder key into the ignition lock again. The vehicle electronics will now attempt to reset to normal status. Then try to start the vehicle.

If the message Safety mode See manual is still shown on the display, the vehicle must not be driven or towed; it must be recovered. Hidden damage may cause the vehicle to become impossible to maneuver while driving, even if it appears roadworthy.

WARNING

Under no circumstances attempt to restart the vehicle if you smell fuel when the message Safety mode See manual appears. Leave the vehicle as quickly as possible.

WARNING

The vehicle must not be towed if it has been placed in safety mode. It must be recovered.

Volvo recommends having the vehicle taken to an authorized Volvo workshop.

General information about child safety

Children of all ages and body sizes must always be correctly secured in the vehicle. Never let a child ride on an occupant's lap.

Volvo recommends keeping children in rear-facing child seats for as long as possible, at least until the age of 3–4 years, and then in forward-facing child seats/booster cushions until the age of 10.

Choose the child's position in the vehicle and the required equipment based on the child's weight and height.
See Child safety.

CAUTION

Legal requirements for placing children in vehicles vary from country to country. Find out the regulations that apply.

Volvo offers child safety products (child seats, booster cushions and attachment devices) designed specifically for your vehicle. Using Volvo child safety products gives your child the best chance of riding safely, and ensures the products fit well and are easy to use.
