Air Conditioning

~1min read

Gaseous refrigerant is compressed by the compressor in much the same way as in a household refrigerator. The compressor is driven by the engine crankshaft via a V-belt. Under compression, the refrigerant becomes liquid and enters the evaporator (radiator). Inside, the refrigerant evaporates and thereby absorbs heat. Air passing through the evaporator enters the cabin cooled. The refrigerant returns to the compressor via the condenser located next to the engine coolant radiator in the engine compartment. To increase condensation, the cooling fan continuously blows air through the condenser.

V-Belt or Poly-V Belt
For reliable operation, the air conditioning compressor V-belt must be properly tensioned. On models with a 6-cylinder engine, a poly-V belt with an automatic tensioner is used instead of a V-belt. For more details on belt drives, see the Generator section.

Note: Repairing the air conditioning system at home – except for checking the V-belt – is not possible. Not every workshop can repair such systems, even Audi workshops. Therefore, in case of faults, first verify that the staff have the appropriate qualifications, and only contact such workshops.
