Seat belts
The seat belts in the BMW 5 Series G30 are key components of occupant protection. This section explains their correct use, from belt positioning to automatic belt pretensioning during emergency braking. Seat belt reminders for the front and rear seats are also explained, including safety functions that activate the belt in critical driving maneuvers.
Number of seat belts
For the safety of the occupants, the vehicle is equipped with five seat belts. Optimum protection is only achieved when the seat belts are worn correctly.
The two outer buckles of the rear bench seat are intended for the occupants seated on the left and right.
The inner buckle of the rear bench seat is intended for the occupant seated in the center.
General
Fasten the seat belts on all occupied seats before every journey. The airbags supplement the seat belts as an additional safety device.
The airbags do not replace the seat belts.
When the seat is set correctly, the belt anchor point fits adults of all body sizes.
Safety notes
WARNING If more than one person is belted into a single seat belt, the protective effect of the seat belt is no longer guaranteed.
There is a risk of injury or death.
Only belt one person into each seat belt.
Do not hold infants and children on your lap. Transport and secure them in the child restraint systems provided for this purpose. WARNING The protective effect of the seat belts may be reduced or lost if they are worn incorrectly. An incorrectly worn seat belt can cause additional injuries, for example in an accident or during braking and evasive maneuvers. There is a risk of injury or death.
Make sure that all vehicle occupants have their seat belts fastened correctly.
WARNING The protective effect of the seat belts may be reduced or lost in the following situations:
- The seat belts are damaged, dirty, or altered in any other way.
- The buckle is damaged or heavily soiled.
- The belt tensioners or belt retractors have been modified.
Seat belts can be damaged in an accident without being noticeable. There is a risk of injury or death. Do not modify the seat belts, buckles, belt tensioners, belt retractors, or belt anchorages, and keep them clean. After an accident, have the seat belts checked by a manufacturer service partner, another qualified service partner, or a specialist workshop.
Correct use of seat belts
- Position the seat belt across the hips and shoulder without twists, snug and as close to the body as possible.
- Position the lap portion of the seat belt low across the hips. The seat belt must not press on the abdomen.
- Do not let the seat belt rub against sharp edges, run it over hard or fragile objects, or pinch it.
- Avoid bulky clothing.
- Tighten the upper body portion of the seat belt upward more often.
Fastening the seat belt
- When fastening, slowly draw the seat belt out of the holder.
- Insert the belt tongue into the buckle.

Once the seat belt is fastened, the driver's and front passenger's belt webbing is automatically tensioned once after driving off.
Releasing the seat belt
- Hold the seat belt.
- Press the red button on the buckle.
Seat belt reminder for driver and front passenger seats

The seat belt reminder activates when the driver's seat belt is not fastened.
On some country variants, the seat belt reminder also activates from approx. 10 km/h when the front passenger's seat belt is not fastened and heavy objects are on the front passenger seat.
Display
A Check Control message is displayed.
Check that the seat belt is fastened correctly.
Seat belt reminder for rear seats
The indicator lamp in the instrument cluster lights up after the engine is started.
- Green: the seat belt on the corresponding rear seat is fastened.
- Red: the seat belt on the corresponding rear seat is not fastened.
The seat belt reminder also activates if a rear seat belt is unfastened while driving.
Safety function
In critical driving situations, such as full braking, the front seat belts are automatically pretensioned.
Once the driving situation has ended without an accident, the belt tension is released again.
If the belt tension does not release automatically, stop and open the seat belt with the red button on the buckle. Close the seat belt again before continuing to drive.
The seat belts of the BMW 5 Series G30/G31 are a central element of occupant protection and provide optimum restraint in every driving situation. Their high-quality construction and precise integration with the vehicle architecture ensure the highest level of protection.
With intelligent functions such as belt tensioners and an automatic seat belt reminder, the driver is actively reminded to fasten the seat belt. This ensures maximum safety at all times for all occupants.
