Wiper system
The wiper system of the BMW 5 Series G30 ensures clear visibility in all weather. This chapter explains the operation of the windshield wipers and the rain sensor. Whether manual control, automatic activation in rain, or dealing with frozen wipers, all details are described precisely and supplemented with safety information. Folding the wipers away and caring for the wiper blades also receive special attention. The rain sensor detects precipitation intensity and automatically adjusts the wiping intervals. In addition, the correct use of washer fluid is explained, including antifreeze and filter care. Integrated safety mechanisms such as anti-pinch protection and rain sensor deactivation in car washes make the system especially practical for everyday use. This manual is essential for anyone who values functional safety and convenient operation in the BMW 5 Series of the 7th generation. Knowledge of the finer points of the wiper system not only helps with vehicle care but also protects against costly damage in winter use.
General
Do not use the wipers on a dry windshield, otherwise the wiper blades may wear out faster or be damaged.
Safety notes
WARNING If the wipers start moving while folded away, body parts can be pinched or vehicle components damaged. There is a risk of injury or property damage. Make sure the vehicle is switched off when the wipers are folded away, and that the wipers are folded back in before switching on. NOTICE If the wipers are frozen to the windshield, the wiper blades can tear off and the wiper motor can overheat when switched on. There is a risk of property damage. Defrost the windshield before switching on the wipers
Switching on

Press the lever up until the desired position is reached.
- Wiper rest position, position 0.
- Rain sensor, position 1.
- Normal wiper speed, position 2.
When stationary, the wipers switch to intermittent operation.
If the drive is interrupted with the wiper system switched on: When the drive is resumed, the wipers continue at the previously set speed.
Switching off and brief wiping

Press the lever down
- Switch off: Press the lever down until the basic position is reached.
- Brief wipe: From the basic position, press the lever down.
Rain sensor
Principle
The rain sensor automatically controls wiper operation depending on rain intensity.
General
The sensor is located on the windshield directly in front of the interior rear-view mirror.
Safety information
NOTICE In car washes, the wipers may start moving unintentionally if the rain sensor is activated. There is a risk of property damage. Deactivate the rain sensor in car washes
Activate/deactivate

From the basic position, press the lever up once, arrow 1.
A wiping cycle is started.
LED in the wiper lever lights up.
Adjusting the rain sensor sensitivity

Turn the thumbwheel to adjust the rain sensor sensitivity.
Up: High rain sensor sensitivity.
Down: Low rain sensor sensitivity.
Windshield and headlight washer system
Safety notes
WARNING At low temperatures, the washer fluid can freeze on the windshield and restrict visibility. There is a risk of an accident.
Only use the washer system if freezing of the washer fluid can be ruled out. If necessary, use antifreeze.
NOTICE If the washer fluid reservoir is empty, the washer pump cannot operate as intended. There is a risk of property damage.
Do not operate the washer system when the washer fluid reservoir is empty.
Cleaning

Pull the lever.
Washer fluid is sprayed onto the windshield and the wipers run briefly.
With the vehicle lights switched on, the headlights are also cleaned at suitable intervals.
Washer nozzles
The washer nozzles are heated automatically when Ready mode is switched on.
Wiper service position
Principle
In the service position, the wipers can be folded away from the windshield.
General
Important, e.g. for replacing the wiper blades or for folding away in frost.
Safety notes
WARNING If the wipers start moving while folded away, body parts can be trapped or vehicle parts can be damaged. There is a risk of injury or property damage. Make sure that the vehicle is switched off when the wipers are folded away, and that the wipers are folded back before switching on. NOTICE If the wipers are frozen, the wiper blades can tear off when switched on and the wiper motor can overheat. There is a risk of property damage. Thaw the windshield before switching on the wipers.
Folding the wipers away

- Switch on standby mode.
- Keep the wiper lever pressed down until the wipers come to a stop in an approximately vertical position.
- Fold the wipers fully away from the windshield.

Folding the wipers back
After folding the wipers back, the wiper system must be activated again.
- Fold the wipers fully back onto the windshield.
- Switch on Ready mode or keep the wiper lever pressed down again.
- The wipers move back to their rest position and are ready for operation again.
The windshield wiper system of the BMW 5 G30/G31 offers precise engineering and well-thought-out safety features. The rain sensor automatically adjusts the wiper speed to the weather, which improves visibility and therefore safety.
The combination of windshield and headlight cleaning is particularly practical, ensuring clear visibility in any weather. The folding function also greatly simplifies everyday use in frost or when replacing wiper blades.
In this way, the BMW 5 G30/G31 demonstrates how comfort and safety work together perfectly in any weather.
