Sealing a Tire with the Tire Service Kit
(A) Whenever you stop to use the tire service kit:
- Move to a safe location and turn on the vehicle hazard warning flashers.
- Make sure the valve stem (on the flat tire wheel) is positioned close to the ground. This allows the tire service kit hoses (4) and (8) to reach the valve stem and keeps the tire service kit level on the ground. This provides the best kit position when injecting sealant into the flat tire and starting the air compressor. Move the vehicle as necessary to position the valve stem in this location before proceeding.
- Place the transmission in PARK (automatic transmission) or Gear (manual transmission) and turn the ignition to OFF.
- Apply the parking brake.
(B) Setting up the tire service kit for use:
- Press the mode selector knob (6) and turn it to the Sealant Mode position.
- Unwind the sealant hose (4), then remove the cap from the fitting at the end of the hose.
- Place the tire repair kit on the ground next to the flat tire.
- Remove the cap from the valve stem, then screw the fitting at the end of the sealant hose (4) onto the valve stem.
- Unwind the power plug (7) and insert the plug into the vehicle's 12-volt power outlet.
NOTE:
Do not remove foreign objects (such as screws or nails) from the tire.
(C) Applying sealant from the tire repair kit to the flat tire:
- Always start the engine before turning on the tire repair kit.
NOTE:
On vehicles with a manual transmission, the parking brake must be applied and the shift lever must be in NEUTRAL.
- After pressing the power button (3), sealant (white liquid) will flow from the sealant bottle (1) through the sealant hose (4) into the tire.
NOTE:
Sealant may leak out through the puncture in the tire.
If sealant (white liquid) does not flow within 0–10 seconds through the sealant hose:
- Press the power button (3) to turn off the tire repair kit. Disconnect the sealant hose (4) from the valve stem. Make sure there is no debris on the valve stem. Connect the sealant hose (4) to the valve stem. Make sure the mode selector knob (6) is in the sealant mode position, not the air mode position. Press the power button (3) to turn on the tire repair kit.
- Connect the power plug (7) to another 12-volt power outlet in the vehicle or in another vehicle, if available. Before turning, make sure the engine is running for the tire repair kit.
- The sealant bottle (1) may be empty due to previous use. Call for assistance.
NOTE:
If the mode selector knob (6) is in the air mode position and the compressor is running, air is supplied only from the air compressor hose (8), not from the sealant hose (4).
If sealant (white liquid) flows through the sealant hose:
- Continue operating the compressor until sealant stops flowing through the sealant hose (4) (normally takes 30–70 seconds). As sealant passes through the sealant hose (4), the pressure gauge (5) may read up to 70 psi (4.8 bar). The pressure gauge (5) will quickly drop from approximately 70 psi (4.8 bar) to the actual tire pressure when the sealant bottle (1) is empty.
- The compressor will begin pumping air into the tire immediately after sealant is applied. The bottle (1) is empty. Continue operating the compressor and inflate the tire to the pressure specified on the tire pressure label on the driver's door pillar (recommended pressure). Check the tire pressure by reading the pressure gauge (5).
If the tire does not inflate to at least 26 psi within 15 minutes:
- The tire is too severely damaged. Do not attempt to drive the vehicle further. Call for assistance.
NOTE:
If the tire is over-inflated, press the release button (2) to reduce the tire pressure to the recommended pressure before continuing.
If the tire is inflated to the recommended pressure or to at least 26 psi (1.8 bar) for 15 minutes:
- Press the power button (3) to turn off the tire repair kit.
- Remove the speed limit label from the top of the sealant bottle (1) and place the label on the instrument panel.
- Immediately disconnect the sealant hose (4) from the valve stem, reinstall the cap on the fitting at the end of the hose, and store the tire repair kit in the vehicle.
- The metal tip of the power plug (3) may become hot after use, so handle it with care.
- Failure to reinstall the cap on the fitting at the end of the sealant hose (4) may result in sealant contacting skin, clothing, and the vehicle interior. It may also cause sealant to contact internal tire repair kit components, which may result in irreversible damage to the kit.
(D) Driving the vehicle:
Immediately after applying sealant and inflating the tire, drive the vehicle for 5 miles (8 km) or 10 minutes to distribute the sealant from the tire repair kit inside the tire. Do not exceed 50 mph (80 km/h).
Before continuing, stop in a safe place.
- Press the mode selector knob (6) and turn it to the Air Mode position.
- Unwind the power plug and insert the plug into the vehicle's 12-volt power outlet.
- Unwind the air compressor hose (8) (black) and screw the fitting at the end of the hose (8) onto the valve stem.
- Check the tire pressure using the pressure gauge (5).
If the tire pressure is below 19 psi (1.3 bar):
The tire is too severely damaged. Do not attempt to drive the vehicle further. Call for assistance.
If the tire pressure is 19 psi (1.3 bar) or higher:
- Press the power button (3) to turn on the tire repair kit and inflate the tire to the pressure specified on the tire and loading information label on the driver's door pillar.
- NOTE:
- If the tire is over-inflated, press the release button (2) to reduce the tire pressure to the recommended pressure before continuing.
- Disconnect the tire repair kit from the valve stem, reinstall the cap on the valve stem, and unplug it from the 12-volt outlet.
- Store the tire repair kit in its designated storage location in the vehicle.
- Have the tire inspected and repaired or replaced at the earliest opportunity at an authorized dealer or tire service center.
- Remove the speed restriction label from the instrument panel after the tire has been repaired.
- Replace the sealant bottle (1) and sealant hose (4) at an authorized dealer service center as soon as possible.
NOTE:
For tire service, contact an authorized dealer or service center. Tire has been sealed using the tire sealant kit.
(F) Sealant Bottle and Hose Replacement:
- Unwind the sealant hose (4) (clear in color).
- Locate the round sealant bottle release button in the recess for the sealant bottle.
- Press the sealant bottle release button. The sealant bottle (1) will pop up. Remove the bottle and dispose of it properly.
- Remove sealant residue from the tire repair kit housing.
- Place the new sealant bottle (1) into the housing so that the sealant hose (4) aligns with the hose slot at the front of the housing. Insert the bottle into the housing. A click will indicate that the bottle is locked in place.
- Make sure the cap is installed on the fitting at the end of the sealant hose (4), and return the hose to its storage location (located in the lower part of the air compressor).
- Return the tire repair kit to its storage location in the vehicle.
