Switching off the engine

~2min read

With the engine at idle, turn the starter key to the STOP position.

WARNING After a demanding journey, run the engine at idle before switching it off, to allow the temperature in the engine compartment to drop.

CAUTION 116) Running the engine in enclosed spaces is dangerous. The engine consumes oxygen and releases carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and other toxic gases.

117) Until the engine is started, the brake servo and electric power steering are not active, so you must apply far greater force than usual to both the brake pedal and the steering wheel.

118) If the engine fails to start with a gear engaged, the potential hazard caused by the gearbox automatically shifting to neutral is signalled by an audible warning. CAUTION 38) If the warning light flashes for 60 seconds after starting or during prolonged cranking, this indicates a fault in the glow plug preheating system. If the engine starts, the vehicle can be used normally, but contact the Fiat Service Network as soon as possible.

39) During the first period of use, it is recommended that you do not ask the vehicle for maximum performance (for example, excessive acceleration, prolonged driving at maximum engine speeds, excessively hard braking, etc.).

40) With the engine off, do not leave the starter key in the ON position, to prevent unnecessary current draw from discharging the battery.

41) Never attempt to start the engine by pushing, towing or using a downhill slope. These procedures could cause fuel to flow into the catalytic converter and irreparably damage it.

42) It is therefore necessary to always keep a sufficient petrol reserve in the tank to protect the fuel pump and to allow temporary switching from LPG or Natural Power mode to petrol mode when high performance is required.

43) "Revving the engine" before switching it off serves no purpose, wastes fuel and, especially for engines with a turbocharger, is harmful
