Ford Fiesta: Supplemental Restraint System / Side Airbag. Removal and Installation

Removal

Warning

The following procedure contains important repair steps required for the restraint system to function correctly during a crash. Follow all notes and steps carefully. Failure to follow the step-by-step instructions may result in improper restraint system operation and increase the risk of serious injury or death in a crash.

If the seat side airbag cover is damaged or separated from its mounting, or if the airbag material has been exposed, install a new seat side airbag assembly. Never attempt to repair a seat side airbag assembly. Failure to follow these instructions may cause the seat side airbag to deploy incorrectly, increasing the risk of serious injury or death in a crash.

Front seatback trim covers on seats equipped with side airbags are not repairable. A new trim cover must be installed. Cleaning is permitted. Failure to follow these instructions may result in improper side airbag deployment and increase the risk of serious injury or death in a crash.

Remove the front seatback trim cover.
Refer to: Front Seatback Trim Cover (501-10 Seat, Removal and Installation).

Remove the side airbag nuts.
Torque: 80 lb-in (9 N·m)

Installation

Inspect the side airbag deployment chute for damage. The deployment chute is not repairable. If there is any damage to the deployment chute, a new seatback trim cover and deployment chute must be installed as a unit. Failure to follow these instructions may cause the seat side airbag module to deploy incorrectly and increase the risk of serious injury or death in a crash.
If the seat side airbag module deployment chute is incorrectly positioned and obstructed, the side airbag module may not deploy correctly. Failure to follow these instructions may cause the side airbag module to deploy incorrectly and increase the risk of serious injury or death in a crash.
Inspect the seat side air bag, air bag cavity, mounting surface and deployment chute for damage or foreign material. Remove all foreign material. Install a new side air bag if damaged. Install a new deployment chute if the deployment chute is damaged. Failure to follow these instructions may cause the side air bag to deploy incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in an accident.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Route the side airbag wiring harness to the inside of the foam seatback pad.
