Pinpoint Test - DTC: FF. Diagnosis and Testing

~8min read

U3003:16 and U3003:17

For circuit and connector information, refer to Wiring Diagrams Cell 46.

Normal Operation - RCM

The RCM module continuously monitors the input voltage for proper operation. If the RCM detects an input voltage below 9.5 volts with a fault present, or below 8.0 volts regardless of whether a fault is present, it stores DTC U3003:16 in memory. If the RCM detects an input voltage above 16 volts with a fault present, or above 18 volts regardless of fault status, it stores DTC U3003:17 in memory. If the RCM sets DTC U3003:16 or U3003:17, it sends a message to the IPC to illuminate the airbag warning indicator.

Normal Operation - OCSM

The OCSM continuously monitors the input voltage for proper operation. If the OCSM detects an input voltage below 8 volts, it stores DTC U3003:16 in memory. If the OCSM detects an input voltage above 18 volts, it stores DTC U3003:17 in memory. If the OCSM sets DTC U3003:16 or U3003:17, it sends a fault message to the RCM. The RCM then sends a message to the IPC to illuminate the airbag warning indicator.

DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

Trouble Code Description Fault Trigger Conditions

U3003:17 Battery Voltage: Circuit Voltage Above Threshold This DTC is set if the RCM detects a voltage above 16 volts with an SRS fault present, or above 18 volts without an SRS fault present.
U3003:16 Battery Voltage: Circuit Voltage Below Threshold This DTC is set if the OCSM detects a voltage below 8 volts.
U3003:17 Battery Voltage: Circuit Voltage Above Threshold This DTC is set if the OCSM detects a voltage above 18 volts.

Possible Causes

  • Wiring, Terminals or Connectors
  • OCSM
  • RCM

Visual Inspection and Preliminary Diagnosis

  • Inspect the wiring harness for damage.
  • Inspect the connectors for loose or damaged terminals.

PINPOINT TEST A: U3003:16 AND U3003:17
NOTE: Most concerns are related to connector and/or wiring issues. Perform a thorough inspection and check before proceeding to the Pinpoint Test.
NOTE: Only disconnect or reconnect SRS components when instructed to do so in the Pinpoint Test step. Failure to follow this instruction may result in an incorrect SRS diagnosis.
NOTE: Install new components only if directed by the pinpoint test.
NOTE: Always verify the correct SRS component is installed. Parts released for other vehicles may be incompatible even if they appear physically similar. Check the part number listed in the Ford parts catalog to confirm the correct component is installed. If an incorrect SRS component is installed, diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) may be set.
NOTE: Before returning the vehicle to the customer, the SRS must be fully functional and operating correctly.
