Parking Brake System
Always apply the parking brake when leaving the vehicle parked. To prevent the vehicle from rolling on a grade, make sure the parking brake is fully applied.
If your vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, first apply the parking brake and only then move the shift lever to the P (Park) position. This sequence prevents unintended vehicle movement and avoids transferring a large load to the transmission output shaft locking mechanism.
Parking Safety Recommendations
• Make sure all doors are securely closed.
• Turn off all lights.
• Place all valuables in the cargo area or take them with you.
• Lock all doors, including the liftgate.
For vehicles equipped with an anti-theft alarm system: Check the instrument panel indicator to make sure the anti-theft alarm system is armed.
• Never park the vehicle on areas covered with dry leaves, tall grass or other flammable materials. Remember that while the engine is running, the catalytic converter becomes extremely hot, which may cause a fire if it contacts flammable materials.
• When parking the vehicle on an incline, turn the front wheels so that the front wheel will contact the curb if the vehicle rolls backward. If the vehicle has a manual transmission, shift into first gear.
• When parking the vehicle on a downhill slope, also turn the front wheels so that the front wheel will contact the curb if the vehicle rolls backward. If the vehicle has a manual transmission, shift into reverse gear.
• Before driving, fully release the parking brake. Driving with the parking brake applied may overheat and damage the rear brake assemblies.
