Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)

~3min read

The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) helps prevent wheel lockup and loss of vehicle control by rapidly increasing and decreasing brake line pressure. Pressure changes occur much faster than a driver can achieve by pressing and releasing the brake pedal.

The Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) system, which is part of the ABS, automatically distributes braking force between the front and rear wheels depending on vehicle load.

Never attempt to imitate ABS operation by pumping the brake pedal. Press the brake pedal down firmly and steadily and allow the ABS to perform its function. This braking technique is sometimes described as "stomp and steer."

When the ABS is activated, you will feel a slight pulsation in the brake pedal, which may be accompanied by a faint noise. This is normal and is caused by rapid cyclic changes in brake line pressure. On dry road surfaces, the ABS activates only during emergency braking.

When braking on icy or snow-covered roads, the ABS may activate almost immediately after light pressure is applied to the brake pedal.

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) Malfunction Indicator

If the ABS warning light is on, the anti-lock braking system is not operating. In this case, the conventional braking system remains operational, but without the anti-lock braking system function. Have the vehicle checked at an authorized dealer service center as soon as possible.

If the ABS warning light comes on while driving, inspect the braking system in accordance with the instructions on page 551.

In this case, a symbol is displayed on the multi-information display«CHECK SYSTEM» (Проверьте систему).This may be accompanied by the message "CHECK SYSTEM."

If the ABS warning light and the parking brake indicator/brake system warning light come on at the same time with the parking brake fully released, the electronic brake force distribution (EBD) system may also not be operating.

Check the condition of the braking system in accordance with the instructions on page 551. Even if the braking system operates normally, if the ABS warning light is on, drive slowly and with caution and have the vehicle checked at an authorized dealer service center at the first opportunity. Avoid sudden braking, which may cause the rear wheels to lock and the vehicle to lose directional stability.

Important Safety Information: The ABS does not shorten braking distance or reduce the vehicle's stopping distance. The ABS can only help you maintain control of the vehicle during braking.

The ABS does not prevent lateral skidding of the wheels during abrupt changes in direction, such as when cornering at excessive speed or making a sudden steering input when changing lanes. Always maintain a safe speed in accordance with road surface and weather conditions.

The ABS cannot prevent loss of directional stability. During sudden braking, avoid jerking the steering wheel. Doing so may cause loss of directional stability and the vehicle may leave the lane or run off the road.

A vehicle equipped with ABS may have a longer braking distance on loose or uneven roads, such as gravel or snow-covered roads.
