Engine Systems Malfunction Indicator (for gasoline engine vehicles)

This indicator comes on when the ignition key is turned to the ON (II) position.

If the indicator comes on at any other time, this indicates a possible malfunction of one of the engine emission control systems. Even if you notice no change in engine operation or vehicle performance, malfunctions in these systems may increase fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Continuing to drive the vehicle under these conditions may result in serious damage.

In this case, a symbol is displayed on the multi-information displayThis may be accompanied by the message "CHECK SYSTEM."

If the engine systems malfunction indicator comes on while driving, stop in a safe place on the shoulder of the road or at the edge of the roadway and turn off the engine. Then restart the engine and observe the indicator.

If the indicator remains on, have the vehicle checked by an authorized dealer as soon as possible. Until the malfunction is corrected, drive the vehicle at moderate speed. Do not drive at high speed or press the accelerator pedal fully.

If the indicator comes on frequently, have the vehicle checked by a dealer service station, even if it goes off after performing the procedure described above.

Continuing to drive with the engine systems malfunction indicator on may damage the exhaust emission control devices and the engine. Warranty coverage does not apply to defects caused by operating the vehicle with the engine systems malfunction indicator on.

When the ignition key is turned to the ON (II) position without starting the engine, the engine systems malfunction indicator should remain on for approximately 20 seconds.

Then, depending on conditions, it should go off or blink 5 times. This is normal and indicates that the system is performing the exhaust system self-diagnostic check.

If your vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, the engine systems malfunction indicator may also come on together with the "D" indicator.
