Driving Your Vehicle

Power Brakes

~1min read

Your vehicle is equipped with a hydraulic brake booster, which operates automatically during normal use.

If the engine stops or stalls while driving, power brake assist will not be available. You can still stop the vehicle by applying greater force to the brake pedal than normal. However, the braking distance will be longer than with power brakes.

When the engine is off, the reserve braking assist is partially depleted each time the brake pedal is applied. Do not pump the brake pedal when the power assist has been interrupted.

Apply the brake pedal only when necessary to maintain control on slippery surfaces.

WARNING

Observe the following precautions:

  • Do not drive while resting your foot on the brake pedal. This will create abnormally high brake temperatures, excessive brake lining and pad wear, and increased stopping distance.
  • When driving downhill for a long distance or up a steep hill, shift to a lower gear and avoid continuous braking. Continuous brake application will overheat the brakes and may result in a temporary loss of braking effectiveness.
  • Wet brakes may reduce the vehicle's ability to slow down safely; the vehicle may also pull to one side when the brakes are applied. Lightly applying the brakes will indicate whether they have been affected in this way. Always check your brakes in this mode after driving through deep water. To dry the brakes, lightly press the brake pedal to warm the brakes while maintaining a safe forward speed until braking effectiveness returns to normal. Avoid driving at high speed until the brakes function properly.
