Driving Your Vehicle

Tire Chains

~2min read

Because the sidewalls of some radial tires are thinner than other types of tires, they may be damaged by mounting some types of tire chains on them. Therefore, using snow tires is recommended instead of tire chains. Do not install tire chains on vehicles with aluminum wheels; if unavoidable, use AutoSock® (fabric tire chain). Install tire chains after reviewing the instructions supplied with the tire chains. Damage to your vehicle caused by improper use of tire chains is not covered by your vehicle manufacturer's warranty.

WARNING

Using AutoSock® (fabric tire chain) may adversely affect vehicle handling:

  • Drive at a speed less than 20 mph (30 km/h) or the tire chain manufacturer's recommended speed limit, whichever is lower.
  • Drive carefully and avoid bumps, potholes, sharp turns, and other road hazards that may cause the vehicle to bounce.
  • Avoid sharp turns or locking the brake wheels.

✽ NOTICE

  • Install AutoSock® (fabric snow chain) on the rear tires for 2WD vehicles or on all four tires for AWD vehicles. Note that installing AutoSock® (fabric tire chain) on the tires will provide greater driving force but will not prevent side slipping.
  • Do not install studded tires without first checking local, state, and municipal regulations for possible restrictions on their use.

Chain Installation

When installing AutoSock® (fabric tire chain), follow the manufacturer's instructions and install them as tightly as possible. Drive slowly (less than 30 km/h) with the chains installed. If you hear the chains contacting the body or chassis, stop and retighten them. If they still contact, reduce speed until the noise stops. Remove the AutoSock® (fabric snow chain) as soon as you begin driving on cleared roads.

When installing AutoSock® (fabric tire chain), park the vehicle on level ground away from traffic. Turn on the hazard warning flasher and place the triangular warning device behind the vehicle (if equipped).

Always place the vehicle in P (Park), apply the parking brake, and turn off the engine before installing tire chains.

CAUTION

When using AutoSock® (fabric tire chain):

  • Chains of the wrong size or improperly installed chains may damage your vehicle's brake lines, suspension, body, and wheels.
  • If you hear noise caused by chains contacting the body, tighten the chain to prevent contact with the vehicle body.
  • To prevent body damage, retighten the chains after driving 0.3~0.6 mile (0.5~1.0 km).
