Winter Precautions

~3min read

Use High-Quality Ethylene Glycol Coolant

Your vehicle is delivered with a high-quality ethylene glycol-based engine coolant. This is the only type of coolant that should be used, because it helps prevent corrosion in the cooling system, lubricates the water pump, and prevents freezing. Be sure to replace or add coolant according to the maintenance schedule in Section 7. Before winter, test the coolant to make sure its freezing point is adequate for the temperatures expected during winter.

Check the Battery and Cables

Winter places additional demands on the battery system. Visually inspect the battery and cables as described in Section 7. The battery charge level can be checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer or service station.

Change to "Winter" Oil if Necessary

In some climates, it is recommended that a lower-viscosity "winter grade" oil be used in cold weather. See Section 8 for recommendations. If you are unsure which oil viscosity to use, consult an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

Check the Spark Plugs and Ignition System

Inspect the spark plugs as described in Section 7 and replace them if necessary. Also inspect all ignition wiring and components to ensure they are not cracked, worn, or damaged in any way.

To Prevent Door Locks from Freezing

To prevent the locks from freezing, spray an approved anti-icing fluid or glycerin into the key opening. If the lock is iced over, spray it with an approved de-icing fluid to remove the ice. If the lock is frozen internally, you may thaw it using a heated key. Use caution when handling the heated key to avoid injury.

Use approved windshield washer antifreeze in the system

To prevent the washer fluid from freezing, add approved windshield washer antifreeze solution in accordance with the instructions on the container. Windshield washer antifreeze is available from an authorized HYUNDAI dealer and most auto parts stores. Do not use engine coolant or other types of antifreeze, as they may damage the paint.

Do not allow the parking brake to freeze

Under some conditions, your parking brake may freeze in the applied position. This is most likely to happen when snow or ice accumulates around or near the rear brakes, or if the brakes are wet. If there is a danger that the parking brake may freeze in the applied position, apply it only temporarily while you shift the shift lever into the P (Automatic transmission) position or into first or reverse gear (manual transmission), and block the rear wheels so the vehicle cannot roll. Then release the parking brake.

Do not allow ice and snow to accumulate under the vehicle

Under some conditions, snow and ice can build up under the fenders and interfere with steering. When driving in severe winter conditions where this may occur, periodically check under the vehicle to make sure the front wheels and steering components are not obstructed.

Carry Emergency Equipment

Depending on the severity of the weather where you drive, you should carry appropriate emergency equipment. Some items you may want to carry include snow tire chains, tow straps or chains, a flashlight, emergency flares, sand, a shovel, jumper cables, an ice scraper, gloves, a rag, coveralls, a blanket, etc.

Do not place foreign objects or materials in the engine compartment.

Placing foreign objects or materials that obstruct engine cooling in the engine compartment may cause a malfunction or fire. The manufacturer is not responsible for damage caused by such placement.
