Description of Scheduled Maintenance Items

~5min read

Engine Oil and Filter

Oil and oil filter replacement must be performed at the intervals specified in the maintenance schedule. If the vehicle is driven off-road, oil and oil filter replacement should be performed more frequently.

Drive Belts

Inspect all drive belts for cuts, cracks, excessive wear, and oil contamination, and replace as necessary. Drive belt tension should be checked regularly and adjusted if necessary.

NOTICE

When inspecting the belt, turn the ignition switch to the LOCK/OFF or ACC position.

Fuel Filter (Cartridge)

A clogged filter may limit vehicle speed, damage the emission system, and cause hard starting. If excessive foreign matter accumulates in the fuel tank, the filter may need to be replaced more often.

After installing a new filter, run the engine for several minutes and check the fittings for leaks. We recommend that the fuel filter be replaced by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

Fuel Lines, Hoses, and Fittings

Inspect the fuel lines, hoses, and connections for leaks and damage. We recommend that fuel lines, hoses, and fittings be genuine HYUNDAI parts supplied by an authorized dealer.

WARNING

Diesel only

Never work on the injection system with the engine running or within 30 seconds after the engine is stopped. The high-pressure pump, rail, injectors, and high-pressure lines remain under high pressure even with the engine off. Fuel spray resulting from leaks may cause serious injury if it contacts the body. Owners of pacemakers should not approach within 30 cm of the ECM or engine compartment wiring harness while the engine is running, due to the magnetic fields generated by the high voltage passing through the engine control module electronics.

Evaporative Emission Hose and Fuel Tank Cap

The evaporative emission hose and fuel tank cap must be inspected at the interval specified in the maintenance schedule. Make sure that the new evaporative emission hose or new fuel tank cap is correctly reinstalled.

Crankcase Vacuum and Ventilation Hoses (if equipped)

Inspect the hose surfaces for mechanical or heat damage. Hard and brittle rubber, cracks, tears, cuts, abrasions, and excessive swelling are signs of deterioration. Pay special attention to hose surfaces closest to major heat sources, such as the exhaust manifold. Route the hoses so that they do not contact heat sources, sharp edges, or moving parts that could damage or wear them. Check all hose connections, such as clamps, to make sure they are secure and show no leaks. Replace hoses immediately if any signs of wear or damage are found.

Air filter

When replacing the air filter, it is recommended to use a genuine HYUNDAI filter.

Spark Plugs (Gasoline Engine)

Be sure to install new spark plugs with the correct heat range.

WARNING

Do not disconnect or inspect the spark plugs while the engine is hot. You may get burned.

Valve Clearance (if equipped)

Check for excessive valve noise and/or engine vibration, and adjust if necessary. We recommend that this service be performed by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

Cooling System

Inspect cooling system components, such as the radiator, coolant reservoir, hoses, and fittings, for leaks and wear. Replace any damaged parts.

Engine Coolant

Engine coolant must be replaced at the interval specified in the maintenance schedule.

Manual Transmission Fluid (if equipped)

Check the manual transmission fluid in accordance with the maintenance schedule.

Automatic Transmission Fluid (if equipped)

The fluid level should be at the "HOT" mark on the dipstick after the engine and transmission have reached normal operating temperature. Check the automatic transmission fluid level with the engine running and the shift lever in the P (Park) position with the parking brake applied.

Intelligent

Automatic transmission fluid is normally red in color. The longer the vehicle is driven, the darker the fluid becomes. This is a normal color change and does not require fluid replacement.

NOTICE

Using an unspecified fluid may cause transmission malfunction. Use only the automatic transmission fluid specified for the transmission. (Refer to "Recommended Lubricants and Capacities" in chapter 8.)

Brake Hoses and Lines

Visually inspect for proper installation, wear, cracks, deterioration, and leaks. Replace any damaged parts immediately.

Brake fluid

Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir. The level should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the side of the reservoir. Use only hydraulic brake fluid that meets DOT 3 or DOT 4 standards.

Parking Brake

Inspect the parking brake system, including the lever (or pedal) and parking brake cables.

Drum Brakes and Rear Brake Shoes (if equipped)

Inspect the rear brake drums and linings for scoring, burns, fluid leakage, broken parts, and excessive wear.

Brake Discs, Brake Pads, Brake Calipers, and Rotors

Check the brake pads for excessive wear, leaks, and wear of the discs, and check for leaks at the calipers. For more information on checking the pad wear limit or lining, refer to the Hyundai website. ( http://brakemanual.hmc.co.kr )

Suspension Mounting Bolts

Make sure the suspension fittings are not loose or damaged. Tighten to the specified torque.

Steering gear, driveshaft and lower arm boot/ball joint

With the vehicle stopped and the engine off, make sure there is no excessive play in the steering.

Make sure the driveshaft is not bent or damaged. Check the boots and ball joints and make sure there is no deterioration, cracking, or damage. Replace any damaged parts.

Driveshafts and boots

Make sure there are no cracks, wear, or damage on the driveshafts, boots, and clamps. Replace any damaged parts and, if necessary, lubricate the parts.

Air conditioning refrigerant (if applicable)

Check the air conditioning hoses and connections for leaks and damage.
