Driving Your Vehicle

Using ABS

~2min read

To get the maximum benefit from ABS in an emergency, do not try to modulate brake pressure or pump the brakes. Depress the brake pedal as firmly as possible.

When you apply the brakes under conditions that may lock the wheels, you may hear brake noise or feel a pulsation in the brake pedal. This is normal and indicates that your ABS is active.

ABS does not reduce the time or distance required to stop the vehicle.

Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.

ABS cannot prevent skidding caused by sudden changes of direction, such as entering a curve too fast or changing lanes abruptly. Always drive at a safe speed for the road and weather conditions.

ABS cannot prevent loss of directional stability. Always hold the steering wheel firmly when braking hard. Sudden or excessive steering may cause your vehicle to slide into oncoming traffic or leave the road.

On loose or uneven road surfaces, ABS operation may result in a longer braking distance than vehicles equipped with a conventional brake system.

ABS warning light () will remain on for a few seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position. During this time, the ABS performs a self-check, and the light will go off if everything is normal. If the light remains on, there may be a problem with the ABS. We recommend that you contact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

WARNING

If the ABS warning light ( ) stays on, there may be a problem with the ABS. Your power brakes will operate normally. To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, we recommend that you contact your HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

NOTICE

When you drive on a road with poor traction, such as an icy road, and apply the brakes continuously, the ABS will be active continuously and the ABS warning light ( ) may illuminate. Pull your vehicle over to a safe place and turn off the engine.

Restart the engine. If the ABS warning light does not come on, the ABS is normal.

Otherwise, you may have problems with the ABS system. We recommend that you contact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

Information

When you start your vehicle from an external power source due to a discharged battery, the ABS warning light ( ) may illuminate at the same time. This is caused by low battery voltage. It does not mean that your ABS is malfunctioning. Charge the battery before driving the vehicle.
