Spark Plug and Ignition System Inspection

Inspect the spark plugs according to the instructions in Section 7 and replace them if necessary. Always check the ignition system wiring for cracks, wear, or other damage.

Preventing Door Lock Freezing

To prevent the locks from freezing, inject an approved de-icer or glycerin into the keyhole. To remove ice that has formed on the lock, spray it with an approved de-icing fluid. If the lock is frozen from the inside, it may be possible to thaw it with a heated key. Handle a heated key carefully to avoid burns.

Fill the washer system only with approved windshield washer fluid

To prevent water in the washer system from freezing, fill it with approved washer fluid, following the instructions on the container. Windshield washer fluid is available from an authorized HYUNDAI dealer and most automotive parts stores. Do not use engine coolant or other types of antifreeze in the washer system, as they may damage the paint.

Preventing the Parking Brake from Freezing

In certain conditions, the parking brake may freeze in the applied position. The most likely cause is accumulation of snow or ice in the area of the rear brakes, or moisture in the brake mechanisms. If there is a risk of the parking brake freezing, apply it only briefly so that you can shift the selector lever to the "P" position and place wheel chocks under the rear wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving. Then release the parking brake.

Do not allow ice and snow to accumulate under the vehicle underbody.

Under certain conditions, snow and ice may accumulate under the wheel arches of the vehicle, which may interfere with steering. When driving in severe winter conditions where such conditions may occur, periodically inspect the underbody of the vehicle to ensure that nothing interferes with the movement of the wheels and steering components.

Carrying Emergency Equipment

Always carry emergency equipment suitable for the severity of the weather conditions. You may need snow chains, tow ropes or chains, a flashlight, flares, sand, a shovel, jumper cables, a windshield scraper, gloves, a ground mat, coveralls, a blanket, etc.
