Battery Charging

Using a Battery Charger

Your vehicle has a maintenance-free, calcium-based battery.

  • If the battery has discharged in a short time (for example, because the headlights or interior lights were left on while the vehicle was not in use), recharge it slowly (trickle charge) for 10 hours.
  • If the battery is gradually discharged due to high electrical load while the vehicle is in use, charge at 20-30 A for two hours.

WARNING

To avoid the risk of serious injury or death from explosion or acid burns:

  • Before performing maintenance or charging the battery, turn off all accessories and stop the engine.
  • Keep all flames, sparks, or smoking materials away from the battery.
  • Always work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
  • Wear eye protection when checking the battery during charging. Do not touch the battery. This may cause serious injury.
  • Remove the battery from the vehicle and place it in a well-ventilated area.
  • Monitor the battery during charging, and stop or reduce the charging rate if the battery cells begin to boil violently.
  • Remove the negative battery cable first and install it last when the battery is disconnected. Disconnect the charger in the following order:
    1. Turn off the charger power switch.
    2. Disconnect the negative clamp from the negative battery terminal.
    3. Disconnect the positive clamp from the positive battery terminal.

NOTICE

AGM Battery (if equipped)

Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries are maintenance-free and must be serviced by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer. Charge only with fully automatic chargers designed specifically for AGM batteries.

CAUTION

Do not open or remove the top cover of the battery. This may cause internal electrolyte leakage, which may result in serious injury.

Jump Starting

After jump starting from a good battery, drive the vehicle for 20-30 minutes before turning it off. The vehicle may not restart if you turn it off before the battery has had the opportunity to recharge adequately. See “Jump Starting” in Chapter 8 for more information on jump starting procedures.

Information

Improper disposal of the battery may be harmful to the environment and human health. Dispose of the battery in accordance with your local laws or regulations.
