Driving Your Vehicle
Power Brakes
In this manual: Driving Your Vehicle
~2min read
Your vehicle is equipped with power-assisted brakes that adjust automatically through normal application.
If the engine is not running or stalls while driving, the brake power assist will not operate. You can still stop the vehicle by applying more force to the brake pedal than normal. However, braking distance may be longer than with brake power assist.
When the engine is not running, the reserve braking force is partially depleted with each depression of the brake pedal. Do not pump the brake pedal when power assist has been lost.
Information
- When the brake pedal is pressed under certain driving or weather conditions, you may temporarily hear a noise. This is normal and does not indicate a problem with your brakes.
- When driving on roads treated with de-icing chemicals, brake noise or abnormal tire wear may occur due to the de-icing chemicals. Under safe driving conditions, apply the brakes several times to remove de-icing chemicals from the brake discs and pads.
WARNING
Observe the following precautions:
- Do not drive with your foot resting on the brake pedal. This causes abnormally high brake temperatures, excessive wear of brake linings and pads, and increased braking distance.
- When descending a long or steep hill, use the steering wheel shift paddles or the shift lever to manually downshift to a lower gear to control your speed without excessively using the brake pedal. Continuous braking will cause the brakes to overheat, which may result in temporary loss of braking performance.
- Wet brakes may reduce the vehicle's ability to stop safely, and the vehicle may also pull to one side when the brakes are applied. Lightly applying the brakes will indicate whether they have been affected. Always check your brakes in this way after driving through deep water. To dry the brakes, lightly apply the brake pedal to warm the brakes while maintaining a safe forward speed until brake performance returns to normal. Avoid driving at high speeds until the brakes function properly.
