SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE

Brake System

~2min read

To ensure brake system performance, all brake system components must be inspected periodically. For proper service intervals, refer to the maintenance schedule.

Brake Master Cylinder Fluid Level Check

The brake master cylinder fluid level must be checked whenever the vehicle is serviced, or immediately if the brake warning lamp illuminates. Add fluid as necessary to bring the level up to the marks on the side of the brake master cylinder reservoir. Be sure to clean the top of the master cylinder before removing the cap. With disc brakes, the fluid level can be expected to drop as the brake pads wear. The brake fluid level should be checked when the pads are replaced. If the brake fluid level is abnormally low, check the system for leaks.

  • Use only the brake fluid recommended by the manufacturer. Refer to page 463. Use of an incorrect brake fluid type may seriously damage your brake system and/or impair its performance. The correct brake fluid type for your vehicle is also identified on the original factory-installed master cylinder reservoir.
  • To avoid contamination by foreign matter or moisture, use only new brake fluid or fluid that has been kept in a tightly sealed container. Keep the master cylinder reservoir cap securely fastened at all times. Brake fluid in an open container absorbs moisture from the air, resulting in a lower boiling point. This may cause unexpected boiling during hard or prolonged braking, leading to sudden brake failure. This may result in a collision.
  • Overfilling the brake fluid reservoir may cause brake fluid to spill onto hot engine parts, resulting in brake fluid ignition. Brake fluid may also damage painted and vinyl surfaces. Use caution and avoid contact with these surfaces.
  • Do not allow petroleum-based fluids to contaminate the brake fluid. Brake seal components may be damaged, resulting in partial or complete brake failure. This could result in a collision.
