Electric Power Steering (EPS)
The hydraulic power steering system uses the engine to assist steering. If the engine is off or the power steering system becomes inoperative, the vehicle can still be steered, but it will require increased steering effort.
Electric power steering is operated by the power steering control unit, which controls the steering motor in response to steering wheel torque and vehicle speed.
Steering becomes heavier as vehicle speed increases and lighter as vehicle speed decreases, for optimal steering control.
If you notice any change in the steering effort required during normal vehicle operation, have the power steering system inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.
- A noise may occur when you turn the steering wheel at low temperature. If the temperature rises, the noise will most likely disappear. This is a normal condition.
- When the vehicle is stationary and the steering wheel is turned continuously to the left or right, the steering wheel becomes harder to turn. The power assist is limited to protect the motor from overheating.
Over time, the steering will return to normal.
✽ NOTICE
The following symptoms may occur during normal vehicle operation:
- The EPS warning light does not illuminate.
- The steering wheel becomes heavy immediately after the ignition is turned on. This occurs while the system performs EPS diagnostics. When diagnostics are complete, the steering wheel will return to normal.
- A click may be heard from the EPS relay after the ENGINE START/STOP button is turned to ON or OFF.
- A motor noise may be heard when the vehicle is stationary or traveling at low speed.
- If the electric power steering system does not operate normally, the warning light will illuminate in the instrument cluster. The power steering system will not function and steering effort may increase. Take your vehicle to an authorized Kia dealer and have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible.
- When the charging system warning light illuminates due to low voltage (when the alternator or battery is not operating normally or is malfunctioning), the steering wheel may require increased steering effort.
