Seat Belt Restraint System

~2min read

WARNING

  • For maximum protection, seat belts must always be used while the vehicle is in motion.
  • Seat belts are most effective when the seatbacks are in an upright position.
  • Children 12 years old and under must always be properly secured in a rear seat. Never allow children to ride in the front passenger seat. If children older than 12 years must sit in the front seat, they must be properly secured with the seat belts and the seat must be moved as far back as possible.
  • Never wear the shoulder belt under your arm or behind your back. An improperly worn shoulder belt may cause serious injury in a crash. The shoulder belt must cross the middle of the shoulder and rest on the collarbone.
  • Never route the seat belt over fragile items. In a sudden stop or collision, the seat belt may damage them.
  • Avoid using twisted seat belts. A twisted belt cannot perform its function properly. In a collision, it may even cut into you. Make sure the belt webbing is flat and not twisted.
  • Take care not to damage the belt webbing or hardware. If the belt webbing or hardware is damaged, replace it.

WARNING

Seat belts are designed to fit the bony structure of the body and must be worn low across the front of the pelvis or hips, chest and shoulders, as applicable. Wearing the lap portion of the belt across the abdomen must be avoided.

Seat belts must be adjusted as tightly as is comfortable to provide the protection for which they were designed.

A loose belt significantly reduces the level of protection for the user.

Take care to prevent the belt webbing from being contaminated by polishes, oils and chemicals, especially battery acid.

Cleaning can be safely performed using mild soap and water. The belt must be replaced if the webbing is worn, contaminated or damaged. It is important to replace the entire assembly after it has been subjected to a severe impact, even if damage to the assembly is not evident. Belts must not be worn with twisted webbing. Each belt assembly must be used by only one person; it is dangerous to place the belt around a child held on an occupant's lap.

WARNING

  • Do not make any modifications or additions that either prevent the seat belt adjusting devices from removing slack or prevent the seat belt retractor from removing slack.
  • When fastening the seat belt, make sure the seat belt tongue does not latch into the buckle of another seat. This is very dangerous, and you may not be protected by the seat belt properly.
  • Do not unbuckle the seat belt or repeatedly fasten and unfasten the seat belt while the vehicle is moving. This may result in loss of control and an accident causing death, serious injury or property damage.
  • When fastening the seat belt, make sure the seat belt does not pass over hard or easily breakable objects.
  • Make sure there is nothing in the buckle. The seat belt may not be latched securely.
