Starting the Engine
WARNING
- Always wear appropriate footwear when operating the vehicle. Inappropriate footwear (high heels, ski boots, etc.) may interfere with your ability to operate the brake, accelerator, and clutch pedals.
- Do not start the vehicle with the accelerator pedal depressed. The vehicle may move and cause an accident.
- Wait until the engine speed returns to normal. The vehicle may move suddenly if the brake pedal is released while the engine speed is high.
Starting the Engine
1. Carry the smart key or place it inside the vehicle.
2. Make sure the parking brake is firmly applied.
3. Manual transmission: Fully depress the clutch pedal and shift the transmission to the neutral position. Keep the clutch pedal and the brake pedal depressed when starting the engine.
Dual clutch transmission / Intelligent variable transmission - Place the shift lever in P (Park). Fully depress the brake pedal.
You can also start the engine when the shift lever is in the N (Neutral) position.
4. Press the engine Start/Stop button. Do not depress the accelerator pedal when starting the engine.
5. Do not wait for the engine to warm up while the vehicle is stationary. Start driving at moderate engine speed. (Avoid extreme and/or excessive acceleration and braking.)
Starting and Stopping the Engine for Turbocharger Intercooler
1. Do not race the engine or accelerate immediately after starting. If the engine is cold, idle for a few seconds to ensure sufficient lubrication of the turbocharger unit.
2. After high-speed or prolonged driving under heavy engine load, let the engine idle for about 1 minute before turning it off. This idle time allows the turbocharger to cool down before the engine is shut off.
CAUTION
Do not turn off the engine immediately after it has been subjected to heavy load. Doing so may cause serious damage to the engine or turbocharger unit.
Starting the Engine with the Smart Key
- Even if the smart key is inside the vehicle, the engine may not start if the key is far from you.
- When the engine Start/Stop button is in the ACC or higher position and any door is opened, the system checks for the smart key. If the smart key is not in the vehicle, the “
” indicator and the message “Key not in vehicle” will appear on the instrument cluster and LCD display. If all doors are closed, the warning buzzer will sound for 5 seconds. The indicator or warning will turn off while the vehicle is driven. Always keep the smart key with you.
WARNING
The engine will start only when the smart key is inside the vehicle. Never allow children or anyone unfamiliar with the vehicle to touch the engine Start/Stop button or similar parts. Pressing the engine Start/Stop button while the smart key is inside the vehicle may cause unintended engine activation and/or unintended vehicle movement.
CAUTION
If the engine stalls while the vehicle is moving, do not attempt to shift the shift lever to P (Park). If road and traffic conditions permit, you may shift the lever to N (Neutral) while the vehicle is still moving, and press the engine Start/Stop button when attempting to restart the engine.

✽ NOTICE
- If the battery is weak or the smart key does not operate properly, you can start the engine by pressing the engine Start/Stop button with the smart key. The key's lock button side must directly contact the engine Start/Stop button. When pressing the engine Start/Stop button directly with the smart key, hold the smart key at a right angle to the button.
- When the brake light fuse has blown, you cannot start the engine normally. Replace the fuse with a new one. If this is not possible, you can start the engine by pressing the engine Start/Stop button for 10 seconds while it is in the ACC position. The engine may start without depressing the brake pedal. However, for your safety, always depress the brake pedal and the clutch pedal (if equipped) before starting the engine.
CAUTION
- Do not press the engine Start/Stop button for more than 10 seconds, except when the brake light fuse has blown.
- Do not turn the ignition switch to the START position while the engine is running. This may damage the starter.
Stopping the Engine (Manual Transmission)
1. Make sure the vehicle is completely stopped and keep the clutch pedal and brake pedal depressed.
2. Shift the transmission into Neutral while depressing the clutch pedal and brake pedal.
3. Apply the parking brake while depressing the brake pedal.
4. Turn the ignition key to the LOCK position and remove it.
