Theft Warning System
The anti-theft alarm system of the Kia Opirus (2003–2012) reliably protects the vehicle against unauthorized access. The system is activated automatically when all doors have been closed and locked with the remote control. Flashing lights and audible alarms indicate the activation status. This section provides important information on deactivation in case of a false alarm, avoiding malfunctions, and what to do in an alarm situation, a clear safety benefit.

Armed status
The system does not trigger an alarm while the ignition key is in the ignition switch.
If the doors were previously locked with the remote control, unlock the doors with the remote control as well.
If the LOCK button (
) on the remote control is pressed while the ignition key is not in the ignition switch and a door or the tailgate is open, the doors lock but the anti-theft alarm system is not armed.
The anti-theft alarm system is only armed automatically once the open door(s) or the tailgate have been closed and locked.
System armed
If the ignition switch is in the LOCK position and the ignition key is not in the ignition switch, the anti-theft alarm system is armed and the turn signals flash once when the following conditions are met:
- Hood, tailgate and all doors are closed and the LOCK button (
) on the remote control is pressed. - If neither a door nor the tailgate is opened within 30 seconds after unlocking with the remote control, all doors are locked again and the anti-theft alarm system is armed again.
NOTE
Only arm the anti-theft alarm system after all occupants have left the vehicle. If an occupant is still inside the vehicle, they may trigger the alarm when they leave.
CAUTIONBefore leaving your vehicle, make sure the hazard warning lights flash once to confirm that the anti-theft alarm system has been armed.
If the hazard warning lights do not flash once, the vehicle cannot activate the anti-theft alarm system and it will not be armed. Therefore, have your vehicle checked by an authorized KIA dealer as soon as possible.
Alarm status
The alarm is triggered when:
1. A door is unlocked with the key instead of the remote control after the vehicle was previously locked with the remote control.
2. The tailgate is opened without using the remote control (the alarm is also triggered if the tailgate is unlocked with the key).
The audible alarm and flashing lights are activated for 27 seconds. The engine cannot be started during this period.
NOTE
Do not attempt to start the engine while the anti-theft alarm system is armed (the engine cannot be started).
Interrupting the alarm
If a door was unlocked with the key instead of the remote control by mistake, the alarm is triggered. If the remote control is at hand, the alarm can be deactivated by pressing the "Unlock" button.
When the anti-theft alarm system is armed, the tailgate can be unlocked with the remote control without triggering the alarm. The door and hood sensors remain active even when the tailgate is open. If a door or the hood is opened, the system triggers the alarm.
System not armed
Under the following conditions, the anti-theft alarm system is deactivated and the turn signals flash twice:
- When the doors are unlocked with the remote control.
If no door is opened within 30 seconds after unlocking with the remote control, all doors are locked again and the anti-theft alarm system is armed again.
- When the ignition key is turned to the ON position.
Under the following conditions, the alarm is cancelled:
- The lock/unlock button on the remote control is pressed.
NOTE - System without immobilizer
- Do not attempt to start the engine while the alarm system is armed. The starter motor is locked while the alarm system is armed. If the system was not deactivated with the remote control, insert the ignition key into the ignition switch, turn it to the ON position and wait 30 seconds. The system is then deactivated.
- If you have lost your keys, contact an authorized KIA dealer.
NOTE - System with immobilizer
- If the system was not deactivated with the remote control, insert the ignition key into the ignition switch and start the engine. The system is then deactivated.
- If you have lost your keys, contact an authorized KIA dealer.
