Ignition switch

~3min read

The ignition switch in the Kia Opirus (2003–2011) combines classic operation with modern safety features. The illumination makes it easier to insert the key in the dark, while the four ignition switch positions (LOCK, ACC, ON, START) are clearly defined. Particular attention is paid to the steering lock and the precautions to observe when leaving the vehicle. Practical handling notes help prevent operating errors and ensure that the vehicle and occupants remain optimally protected at all times.

Ignition switch illumination

If a door is opened while the ignition is not switched on, the ignition switch illumination switches on automatically. This illumination goes out approx. 10 seconds after the door is closed or when the ignition is switched on.

Ignition switch positions

LOCK

The steering lock is locked in this position (theft protection).

The ignition key can only be removed in this position.

To turn the key to LOCK, push the key into the ignition switch in ACC position, then turn the key further until it reaches LOCK.

ACC

The steering lock is unlocked and electrical accessories are switched on.

ON

The warning lights can be checked before starting the engine. This is the normal switch position when the engine is running.

To prevent the battery from discharging, do not leave the ignition switch in ON position when the engine is off.

START

To start the engine, turn the ignition key to START position. In this position the starter motor operates until you release the key.

The key then returns to ON position. In this position the brake warning light can be checked.

NOTE

If the ignition key does not turn easily to START position, move the steering wheel left and right to fully release the steering lock. Then turn the key to START position.

CAUTION - Ignition key
  • Never turn the ignition key to LOCK or ACC position while driving. This would cause loss of steering and loss of proper braking. There is then an absolute risk of an accident.
  • The steering wheel lock is not a substitute for the parking brake. Therefore, before leaving the vehicle, make sure that the selector lever is set to the P (Park) position, the parking brake is applied, and the engine is switched off. If these precautions are not observed, the vehicle may move suddenly and unexpectedly.
  • Never reach through the steering wheel to the ignition switch, switches or other controls while driving. You could lose control of the vehicle, which could result in an accident and serious or fatal injuries.
  • Do not place loose objects in the driver's seat area, as these objects could interfere with driving and cause an accident.

The ignition switch of the Kia Opirus 2003–2011 is part of a well-designed system that combines safety and convenience. With various positions from LOCK to START, it enables precise control of the vehicle.

Particular emphasis is placed on safe operation in order to minimize the risk of malfunctions and accidents. This keeps the Kia Opirus a reliable partner in everyday life.
