Special Service Tools Required

Deployment Tool 0957A-34100A Before disposing of any airbags or side airbags (including the entire vehicle being scrapped), the airbags or side airbags must be deployed. If the vehicle is still within the warranty period, the technical manager must give permission and/or special instructions before the airbags or side airbags are deployed. Only after the airbags or side airbags have deployed (for example, as a result of a vehicle collision) can they be disposed of. If the airbags or side airbags appear intact (not deployed), handle them with special care. Follow this procedure. Deploying the Airbags in the Vehicle If a vehicle equipped with the SRS is to be completely scrapped, its airbags or side airbags must be deployed while still in the vehicle. Airbags or side airbags must not be treated as spare parts and must never be installed in another vehicle.

   Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least three minutes.

   Make sure each airbag or side airbag is securely mounted.

   Make sure the special tool operates correctly by performing the following check procedure. Driver's Airbag:

   A.	Remove the driver's airbag and install SST (0957A-38500).

   B.	Install the driver airbag onto the steering wheel.

   Front passenger airbag:

   A.	Remove the glove box, then disconnect the 4P connector between the passenger airbag and the main SRS wire harness.

   B.	Install the SST (0957A-3F100).

   Side airbag:

   A.	Disconnect the 2-pin connector between the side airbag and the wire harness.

   B.	Install the SST (0957A-3F100).

   Curtain airbag:

   A.	Disconnect the 2-pin connector between the curtain airbag and the wire harness.

   B.	Install SST (0957A-38500).

   Seat belt pretensioner:

   A.	Disconnect the 2P connector from the seat belt pretensioner.

   B.	Install SST (0957A-38500).

   Anchor pretensioner:

   A.	Disconnect the 2-pin connector from the anchor pretensioner.

   B.	Install SST (0957A-38500).

   Place the deployment tool at least thirty feet (10 meters) away from the airbag.

   Connect a 12-volt battery to the tool.

   Press the deployment switch on the tool. The airbag should deploy (the deployment is clearly heard and seen: a loud bang and rapid inflation of the cushion followed by slow deflation).

   Dispose of the airbag as a whole. No part of it may be reused. Place it in a strong plastic bag and seal it securely.

   Confirm that the special tool operates correctly by performing the check procedure on this page.

   Place the airbag face up, outdoors, on a level surface at least thirty feet (10 meters) away from any obstacles or people.

    If it is installed in the vehicle, follow the procedure for removing the driver's airbag, passenger airbag and side airbag.

    In all cases, short the circuit by twisting together the two airbag deployment wires.

    Package the airbag in the same way as the new replacement part.
