The EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution) system, as a subsystem of the ABS, controls the maximum braking efficiency of the rear wheels. It also utilizes the performance of the highly developed ABS hardware by controlling rear wheel slip during partial braking. The braking force is controlled electronically to approach the optimum, eliminating the need for a proportioning valve. A mechanical proportioning valve has limitations in achieving ideal brake force distribution to the rear wheels, and in flexibly distributing braking force in proportion to increased vehicle load or weight. In the event of a malfunction, the driver may not notice whether it has failed. The EBD, controlled by the ABS control module, calculates the slip ratio of each wheel at all times and monitors rear wheel brake pressure so that it does not exceed that of the front wheels. If the EBD fails, the EBD warning lamp (parking brake lamp) illuminates. Advantages
Improved performance of the basic brake system.
Compensation for different friction coefficients.
Elimination of the proportioning valve.
Malfunction recognition by warning lamp.
