  1. In principle, ESC and TCS control is prohibited when an ABS failure occurs.
  2. When an ESC or TCS failure occurs, only the failed system control is prohibited.
  3. However, when the solenoid valve relay must be turned off in the event of an ESC failure, refer to ABS fail-safe.
  4. The ABS fail-safe information is identical to the fail-safe in systems where ESC is not installed.
  5. It stores the code as long as backup lamp power is connected. (O)
  6. It stores the code as long as HCU power is on. (X)
  7. The initial check is performed immediately after power is applied to the HECU.
  8. The valve relay check is performed immediately after IG2 is turned on.
  9. It performs the check at all times while IG2 power is on.
  10. Turn off the system, perform the following actions, and wait for the HECU power to turn off.
  11. Turn off the valve relay.
  12. Stop control during operation and do not perform any action until normal condition is restored.
  13. The ESC warning lamp illuminates for 3 seconds after the ignition is turned on.
  14. The ESC function lamp flashes when ESC is active.
  15. If an ESC malfunction occurs, the ESC warning lamp comes on.

Diagnostic Notes
The phenomena listed in the following table are not abnormal.
Condition Description
System Check Sound When the engine is started, a dull knocking sound may sometimes be heard from the engine compartment. This is because the system is performing a check.
ABS Operation Sound
  1. A motor sound from inside the ABS hydraulic unit (whine) during operation.
  2. A sound is generated together with brake pedal vibration (scraping).
  3. During ABS operation, sound may come from the vehicle chassis due to repeated brake pressing and releasing (knocking: suspension; squeal: tires).
ABS Operation (Longer Stopping Distance) On road surfaces such as snowy or gravel roads, the stopping distance of vehicles with ABS may sometimes be longer than that of other vehicles. Accordingly, advise the customer to drive safely on such roads by reducing vehicle speed.
Diagnostic trouble code conditions may differ depending on the code. When checking the malfunction symptom after the diagnostic trouble code has been erased, make sure the requirements listed in "Comments" are met.

Detection Condition
Symptom Condition Possible Cause
Brake operation depends on driving conditions and road surface condition, so diagnosis may be difficult. However, if a normal DTC is displayed, check the following possible causes. If the problem still occurs, replace the ESC control module.
  • Faulty power supply circuit
  • Faulty wheel speed sensor circuit
  • Faulty hydraulic circuit due to leakage
  • Faulty HECU

Inspection Procedures. Check DTC.
  1. Connect GDS to the data link connector and turn the ignition on.
  2. Make sure that a DTC is output.
  3. Is a DTC output?
▶ Check the power supply circuit.
▶ Erase the trouble code and repeat the check using GDS.
  4. Disconnect the connector from the ESC control module.
  5. Turn the ignition on, measure the voltage between terminal 29 of the ESC control module harness side connector and body ground.

    Specification: Approximately B+

  6. Is the voltage within specification?
    ▶ Check the ground circuit.
▶ Check the harness or connector between the fuse (10 A) in the engine compartment fuse block and the ESC control module. Repair if necessary.
  7. Disconnect the connector from the ESC control module.
  8. Check the continuity between terminals 13 and 38 of the ESC control module harness side connector and the body ground point.
  9. Is there continuity?
▶ Check the wheel speed sensor circuit.
▶ Repair the open wire and ground point.
  10. Refer to DTC troubleshooting procedures.
  11. Is this normal?
▶ Check the hydraulic circuit for leaks.
▶ Repair or replace the wheel speed sensor.
  12. Refer to hydraulic lines.
  13. Check the hydraulic lines for leaks.
  14. Is this normal?
▶ If the problem persists, replace the ESC control module.
▶ Repair leaks in the hydraulic lines.

  4. Refer to DTC troubleshooting procedures.
  5. Is this normal?
▶ Check the stop lamp switch circuit.
▶ Repair or replace the wheel speed sensor.
  6. Verify that the stop lamp illuminates when the brake pedal is depressed and goes off when the brake pedal is released.
  7. Measure the voltage between terminal 23 of the ESC control module harness side connector and body ground while depressing the brake pedal.

    Specification: Approximately B+

  8. Is the voltage within specification?
▶ Check the hydraulic circuit for leaks.
▶ Repair the stop lamp switch. Repair the open circuit in the wire between the ESC control module and the stop lamp switch.
  9. Refer to hydraulic lines.
  10. Check the hydraulic lines for leaks.
  11. Is this normal?
▶ If the problem persists, replace the ESC control module.
▶ Repair leaks in the hydraulic lines.

Check the power supply to the ESC control module. Check for poor ground. Detection condition
Symptom Condition Possible Cause
When current flows in the HECU, the ABS warning lamp turns off as an initial check. Therefore, if the lamp does not come on, the cause may be an open circuit in the lamp power supply, a burned-out bulb, an open circuit in both circuits between the ABS warning lamp and the HECU, or a faulty HECU.
  • Faulty ABS warning lamp bulb
  • A blown fuse related to ABS in the engine compartment relay/fuse block.
  • Faulty ABS warning lamp module
  • Faulty HECU

Inspection Procedures. Check the problem.
  1. Disconnect the connector from the ESC control module and turn the ignition on.
  2. Does the ABS warning lamp illuminate?
