Components and Functions of the SRS Restraint System

The SRS system consists of the following components:
1. Driver front airbag module
2. Passenger front airbag module
3. Side airbag modules
4. Curtain airbag modules
5. Seat belt pretensioner*
6. Airbag warning lamp
7. SRS control module (SRSCM)
8. Side impact sensors*
9. Passenger front airbag ON/OFF switch*
10. Passenger front airbag ON/OFF indicator*
The SRSCM constantly monitors all SRS components while the ignition is ON to determine whether the impact is severe enough to activate the airbags or seat belt pretensioners.
The SRS airbag warning lamp "
" on the instrument panel illuminates approximately 6 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position. Then the SRS airbag warning lamp "
" goes out.
WARNING
The following conditions indicate an SRS malfunction. In this case, have the system inspected by a specialized workshop. Kia recommends visiting a Kia dealer or service partner.
- The warning lamp remains illuminated after the ignition is switched ON for a short time.
- The warning lamp does not go out approximately 6 seconds after switching ON.
- The warning lamp illuminates while driving.
- The warning lamp flashes when the ignition switch is in the ON position.

Two airbag modules are located in the center of the steering wheel and in the instrument panel above the glove box. If the SRS control module detects a sufficiently severe impact to the front of the vehicle, the front airbags deploy automatically.

When deployed, the tear seams in the covers open, and the airbag inflates through the openings on the right and left covers. The resulting openings in the covers allow the airbag to fully inflate.

A fully inflated airbag, used together with a correctly fastened seat belt, decelerates the forward movement of the driver or passenger and reduces the risk of head and chest injuries.
Immediately after full inflation, the airbag deflates, allowing the driver an unobstructed view forward and the ability to steer and operate other controls.

WARNING
- Do not place or mount any objects on the instrument panel above the glove box on the passenger side without accessories (cup holder, stickers, etc.). Such objects can become dangerous projectiles and cause injury if the passenger airbag deploys.
- If you mount a liquid air freshener in the vehicle, do not place it near the instrument cluster or on the surface of the instrument cluster. Such items can become dangerous projectiles and cause injury if the passenger airbag deploys.
WARNING
- When an airbag deploys, you may hear only a loud bang, and then fine dust appears in the vehicle. These side effects are normal and not dangerous; airbags are packed with this fine powder. Dust released when an airbag deploys may irritate the eyes and may cause asthma-like reactions in some people. After an accident, wash all exposed skin with cold water and mild soap.
- The SRS system can only be used when the ignition is on. If the SRS airbag warning light
does not come on after turning the ignition on, stays on for more than 6 seconds, or comes on while driving or after repeatedly starting the engine, the SRS system is not functioning properly. In this case, have the system inspected by a qualified workshop. Kia recommends visiting a Kia dealer/service partner. - Before replacing a fuse or disconnecting the battery, turn the ignition switch to LOCK and remove the ignition key. Always turn the ignition off before removing or replacing fuses related to the airbag system. Never replace these fuses with the power on. If this warning is ignored, the SRS warning light
will come on.
