Safety Equipment of Your Vehicle

Head airbag

~6min read

Curtain airbags are located on both roof edges above the center pillars.

They are designed to protect the driver, front passenger and outboard rear seat passengers in certain side impact accidents.

Curtain airbags are designed to deploy only in certain side collisions, depending on the severity, angle, speed and impact point of the impact. Side airbags are not designed to protect against all side collisions and collisions at the front or rear of the vehicle, or to prevent rollover.

WARNING

  • Therefore, the side and head/shoulder airbags provide the best protection for the driver, front passenger and outboard rear passengers when they are sitting properly with their seat belts fastened. It is important that children sit in the rear seat in appropriate child restraint systems.
  • When children are seated in the rear seats, they must sit in a suitable child restraint system. Make sure the child restraint system is installed as far away from the door as possible and secure the child restraint in the latched position.
  • Do not allow passengers to lean their head or body against the doors, rest their arms on the doors, hold their arms out of the window, or place objects between themselves and the door when seated on the side and/or head airbag seats.
  • Never attempt to open the curtain airbag system or service its components. If the system needs service, wait for a specialized workshop. Kia recommends visiting a Kia authorized dealer/service partner.

If you do not follow the instructions above, you may not be protected from injury or death of vehicle occupants in an accident.

WARNING

Do not attach objects

  • Do not hang objects over the airbag. Also do not place objects in the area where the airbag inflates, such as on the doors, door windows, front and rear pillars and side roof rails.
  • Do not hang hard or fragile objects on the coat hooks.

Airbag Impact Sensors

❈ The actual impact sensors in your vehicle may differ from this illustration. Why does my airbag not deploy in a collision? (Conditions for deploying or not deploying the airbag)

There are many types of accidents in which the additional protective effect of the airbags cannot be expected. These include rear-end collisions, multiple successive collisions in pileups, and low-speed collisions.

1. SRS Control Module

2. Front Impact Sensor

3. Side impact sensor (if equipped)

4. Side impact sensor (if equipped)

WARNING

  • Do not strike or apply any force to the areas where airbags or sensors are installed. This may cause unintended airbag deployment, which may result in serious or fatal injury.
  • If the installation position or angle of any sensor is changed, the airbags may deploy unexpectedly or fail to deploy in a collision, which may cause serious injury or death. Therefore, do not attempt to work on or around the airbag or sensors. Have the system serviced by a specialized workshop. Kia recommends visiting a Kia dealer/service partner.
  • Problems may occur if the angle of the sensor is changed due to deformation of the front bumper, the body, or the floor, and the side of the C-pillar where the impact sensors are installed. In this case, have the vehicle inspected at a specialized workshop. Kia recommends visiting a Kia dealer or Kia service partner.
  • Your vehicle is designed with certain crumple zones for absorbing impact energy and airbag triggers. If a bumper protector that is not suitable or a non-original bumper is installed, the behavior in an impact and the airbag control of your vehicle may be adversely affected.

Conditions for Airbag Deployment

Front Airbags

The front airbags are normally designed to deploy in a frontal collision. Deployment depends on the severity, speed, and angle of the impact.

Side and Curtain Airbags

The side and/or curtain airbags are designed to deploy in a side collision. Deployment depends on the severity, speed, or angle of the impact detected by the side impact sensors.

Although the front airbags (driver and front passenger airbags) are designed to deploy only in frontal collisions, they may also deploy in other collisions when the front impact sensors detect a sufficient impact force. The side and/or curtain airbags are designed to deploy only in side collisions. However, they may also deploy in other collisions when the side impact sensors detect a sufficient impact force.

If the vehicle's underbody strikes a rough road or an object on the ground that is not intended for driving, impact loads may cause the airbags to deploy. When driving on unpaved roads or on terrain not intended for vehicles, drive carefully to avoid unintended airbag deployment.

Conditions in Which Airbags Will Not Deploy

• In certain collisions at lower speeds, the airbags may not deploy. Airbags are not designed to deploy in such cases, because under these circumstances they cannot improve the protective effect of the seat belts.

• Airbags are designed to not deploy in rear impacts, because occupants are moved backward in a rear impact. In this case, deployed airbags would not provide additional benefit.

• Front airbags are not designed to deploy in side collisions, because occupants move toward the side of impact. For this reason, deployed front airbags would not provide additional personal protection in side collisions. Side and curtain airbags may vary in deployment depending on the severity, vehicle speed, and angle of impact.

• In a collision at a certain angle, the impact force may throw occupants in a direction where airbags provide no additional benefit, and therefore the sensors may decide not to deploy the airbags.

• Drivers often apply the brakes very hard immediately before a collision. Such hard braking tends to make the front of the vehicle dip down, so the front of the vehicle may pass under a higher stationary vehicle. In such "submarining" situations the airbags may not deploy, because the impact force detected by the sensors under these conditions may be too low.

• Airbags are not designed to deploy in most rollover accidents, even if the vehicle is equipped with side and curtain airbags.

NOTICE

However, side and/or curtain airbags deploy when the vehicle rolls over after a side impact (if the vehicle is equipped with side and curtain airbags).

• Airbags may not deploy in a collision with an object such as a pole or tree, where the point of impact is concentrated in a narrow area and the full force of the impact is not delivered to the sensors.
