Economical Driving
Your vehicle's fuel economy depends largely on your driving habits and driving conditions, that is, where you drive and when you drive.
All of these factors affect how many kilometers you get per liter of fuel. To drive your vehicle as economically as possible, please observe the following tips. These tips can help reduce fuel and maintenance costs:
- Drive smoothly. Accelerate moderately. Accelerate slowly and avoid shifting gears at high engine speeds. Maintain a steady driving speed. Do not brake excessively between traffic lights. Adjust your speed to the traffic flow so that speed does not need to change unnecessarily. Avoid driving in dense traffic whenever possible. Always keep a safe distance from other vehicles so that unnecessary braking can be avoided. This also reduces brake wear.
- Drive at moderate speeds. The faster you drive, the more fuel your vehicle uses. Especially on highways, driving at moderate speed is an effective way to reduce fuel consumption.
- Do not rest your foot on the brake pedal. This can lead to increased fuel consumption and increased wear of the affected components. In addition, the brakes may overheat if you keep your foot on the pedal. This reduces their effectiveness and may lead to more serious consequences.
- Take care of your tires. Keep tires inflated to the recommended pressure. Incorrect tire pressure, either too high or too low, causes unnecessary tire wear. Check tire pressure at least once a month.
- Make sure the wheels are properly aligned. Incorrect alignment can be caused by striking a curb or driving too fast over uneven surfaces. Incorrect wheel alignment, among other problems, leads to higher tire wear and higher fuel consumption.
- Keep your vehicle in good condition. Maintain your vehicle according to the maintenance schedule under "Maintenance" on page 8-07 to achieve lower fuel consumption and lower maintenance costs. If you drive your vehicle under severe conditions, more frequent maintenance is required (for more information see "Maintenance" on page 8-07).
- Keep your vehicle clean. Take care to keep the vehicle clean and free of corrosion-promoting substances. It is especially important that mud, dirt, ice, etc. do not accumulate under the vehicle. The additional weight can result in higher fuel consumption and promote corrosion.
- Do not load your vehicle unnecessarily. Do not carry unnecessary weight in your vehicle. Additional weight increases fuel consumption.
- Do not let the engine idle longer than necessary. If you have to wait, turn off the engine and restart it only when you are ready to drive.
- Remember: your vehicle does not need a long warm-up period. After starting the engine, let it run for 10 to 20 seconds before engaging a gear. In very low outside temperatures, let the engine warm up somewhat longer.
- Do not run the engine at too low or too high engine speed. Driving at too low engine speed in too high a gear causes the engine to lurch or stall. If this happens, shift to a lower gear. Over-revving means the engine accelerates beyond its safe limit. This can be avoided by shifting at the recommended speeds.
- Use your air conditioner sparingly. The air conditioner is powered by engine output, so using it leads to higher fuel consumption.
- Open windows at high speeds can increase fuel consumption.
- Fuel consumption is higher with crosswind or headwind. To compensate for losses, reduce your speed in these conditions.
To maintain the economy and safety of the vehicle, it is important to keep appropriate operating conditions. Therefore, have the system serviced by an authorized workshop.

WARNING
Motor während der Fahrt nicht abschalten
Never turn off the engine to coast downhill or while the vehicle is moving. When the engine is not running, the power steering and brake booster will not function properly. On downhill slopes, select a suitable lower gear instead to use engine braking. Turning off the ignition while driving may also engage the steering lock. This would make it impossible to steer, which could result in serious or fatal injury.
