Towing a Trailer (Europe Only)

~3min read

If you plan to use your vehicle to tow a trailer, first check national regulations and legal requirements.

Different laws may apply to towing trailers and towing vehicles. Kia recommends that you contact an authorized Kia dealer or service partner.

WARNING

Trailer Operation

Use only a approved towing device for towing and adjust your driving style for trailer operation so that you always remain in control of the vehicle. If the trailer is too heavy, the brakes of your vehicle may become overloaded or fail completely. You and others may be seriously or fatally injured. Only drive with a trailer if you have followed all instructions in this section.

WARNING

Maximum Permissible Weight

Before driving with a trailer, check the gross trailer weight, the towing vehicle, and the axle loads and tongue load of the trailer so that the permissible values are not exceeded.

WARNING

When driving with a trailer, the ISG and LKA functions must be turned off.

NOTICE

Europe only

  • The technically permissible maximum rear axle load may be exceeded by up to 15%, and the technically permissible maximum payload of the vehicle by no more than 10% or 100 kg, whichever value is lower. In this case, you may drive with a M1 category vehicle at a speed of 100 km/h and with an N1 category vehicle at a speed of 80 km/h.
  • When towing a trailer, the additional load on the towing device may be up to 15% higher than the maximum permissible rear axle load. In this case, do not drive faster than 100 km/h; the rear tire pressure must be at least 20 kPa higher than the normal tire pressure recommended without a trailer.

DANGER

Improper use of a trailer may seriously damage your vehicle. Resulting expensive repairs are not covered by the manufacturer's vehicle warranty. Observe the trailer driving tips in this section.

Your vehicle is designed for towing a suitable trailer. To determine the exact towing capacity for your vehicle, please read the information in the "Trailer Weight" section on page 6-122.

Always remember that driving with a trailer differs from driving without a trailer. Towing a trailer affects handling, wear, and fuel consumption. Successful and safe driving with a trailer requires proper equipment and an appropriate driving style.

This section contains important information on trailer operation as well as safety instructions. These tips are important for both your own safety and the safety of your passengers. Please read the following pages carefully before towing a trailer.

Components of the vehicle affected by trailer operation, such as the engine, transmission, wheels, and tires, are subjected to greater wear and higher loads due to the weight of the trailer. The engine must work at higher speeds and under higher loads, which results in a higher operating temperature. In addition, the trailer increases air resistance, which also leads to a greater tractive load.

NOTICE

Location of Towing Hitch

After removing the rear bumper and crossmember, the towing hitch can be installed. After installing the towing hitch, the rear bumper must be replaced.
