Starting the Diesel Engine

~1min read

To start a diesel engine when cold, preheat it before cranking, and warm it up before starting to drive.

1. Make sure the parking brake is applied.

2. Manual transaxle: Fully depress the clutch pedal and shift the transaxle into neutral. Keep the clutch pedal and brake pedal depressed when turning the ignition key to the START position.

Automatic transaxle / DCT* - Place the shift lever in P (Park). Fully depress the brake pedal.

You can also start the engine when the shift lever is in N (Neutral).

3. Turn the ignition key to the ON position to preheat the engine. The glow indicator will then illuminate.

4. When the glow indicator goes off, turn the ignition key to the START position and hold it there until the engine starts (maximum 10 seconds), then release the key.

✽ NOTICE

If the engine does not start within 10 seconds after preheating is complete, turn the ignition key to the LOCK position for 10 seconds, then return it to the ON position to preheat again.

Starting and Stopping the Engine for Turbocharger and Intercooler

1. Do not rev or accelerate the engine immediately after starting.

If the engine is cold, run it at idle for a few seconds until sufficient lubrication is provided to the turbocharger unit.

2. After high-speed or prolonged driving under heavy load, run the engine at idle for about 1 minute before turning it off.

This idle time allows the turbocharger to cool down before the engine is shut off.

CAUTION

Do not shut off the engine immediately after it has been under heavy load. This may cause serious damage to the engine or turbocharger unit.
